Hospitals can be scary places, especially for kids. Since October 7 in Israel, keeping kids calm has been even more complicated when stress levels are high.
Hadassah Hospital Ein Kerem Head of Pediatrics Prof. Ariel Tenenbaum and department administrator Poriya Amster thought that creating a more cheerful atmosphere through art would benefit patients and their families. At the same time, they could express their values by supporting a child-friendly project created to raise funds for Gaza border residents. Presto! The foyer of the third floor of the Charlotte E. Bloomberg Mother and Child Center was turned into an art exhibit.
Students at Jerusalem’s Bezalel Academy of Art and Design created cheerful paintings depicting the Gaza-border communities as they appeared prior to the Hamas invasion. The bright colors and happy scenes of biking, fields, tractors and playtime immediately elicit smiles and questions, which engage both the young and old who walk in.
“The project offers a rare combination of innocent paintings full of beauty and hope alongside the privilege to support and sympathize with the inhabitants of the Gaza border communities,” says Prof. Tenenbaum.
The exhibition was made possible through the generosity of the Dr. Nina Litton Endowment for Pediatrics, which was established in 1984 with the bequest of Dr. Litton, a pediatrician at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston.
