Letter from the President
Dear Members of Hadassah Chicago-North Shore Chapter
I hope everyone made it comfortably through our recent weather challenges and you are enjoying the balmy 30’s we are now having. While the chill forced us to close the office more than we’d like, we are back in the swing of things and working as hard as always for Hadassah.
The opening of our new Hadassah Resale Shop is just around the corner! The Highland Park store will be closing on Tuesday, January 14. Stop in before then because everything is 50% off! We are accepting donations at the Highland Park location until Tuesday. On Sunday, January 19, our new store will open its doors at 12:00 noon! Stop by and see us between 12:00 and 4:00 that day. We will be accepting donations at the new store beginning on Monday, January 20, 2014. Please look through our Weekly Scroll for details on the store location and a coupon to use by February 28, 2014.
If you’re a snowbird in the Boca Raton, Phoenix/Scottsdale or Naples area, you should have received or will shortly receive your invitation to a Snowbird Reunion in February. Please send your reply in soon so you can join the fun in your area.
As always, peruse the wonderful chapter and group programs and events within this Weekly Scroll. I look forward to seeing you in the office soon.
Have a wonderful weekend and a Shabbat Shalom,
We are pleased to announce that Hadassah House Resale Shop is Moving! Please see below for the details.

Hadassah Chicago-North Shore is Growing!
We're starting new groups and programs!
Atid (meaning "future") is an exciting new group for women in their 20's and 30's living in the city. Group events (meeting evenings in the city) will include opportunities for personal growth, education, advocacy, Jewish continuity and fundraising. Atid is being formed in keeping with Hadassah's mission and its commitment to its partnership with the land and people of Israel, and in order to strengthen Hadassah's future. If you or someone you know may be interested in this group, please contact Nancy Spivak at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Training Wheels/Al Galgalim is returning to the northern suburbs for families with children ages 1-5 who wish to partner in discovering the joys of being Jewish. Through songs, games, stories, crafts and more, families will learn about Jewish holidays, rituals, Shabbat and more in a fun, relaxed setting. Sessions will take place throughout the year on Sunday mornings. If you or someone you know may be interested in this group, please contact Nancy Spivak at email@example.com.
HMO Military Track Makes Dramatic Impact on Survival Rates of Wounded Soldiers
The Tzameret military track at the Hebrew University-Hadassah Medical School, which prepares doctors for service, has made a dramatic impact on the survival rates of wounded soldiers. The IDF is the first army in the world to use dried plasma [reconstituted on the battlefield] to stop hemorrhaging and save lives. The head of the IDF medical corps reported a 50 percent reduction in deaths from battlefield injuries.
Hadassah Researchers Developing System to Replace Sick Eye Genes with Healthy Ones
Hadassah is working with other medical centers around the world to develop a safe system for treating people with retinitis pigmentosa (RP) by introducing corrective genetic material to the cells of an eye.
RP is a hereditary eye disease that renders nearly half those who have it nearly blind, due to a gradual damage of the tissue lining at the back of the eye. Hadassah researchers are able to replace the sick gene with a healthy gene so that the cell starts to produce the protein that was missing and whose absence caused the disease.
