Letter from the President

Dear Members of Hadassah Chicago-North Shore Chapter:

 I have had the most exciting week and I want to share it all with you! The Resale Shop moved!!!

In a process we began last March, we are finally moving into our new beautiful store. As I’ve said before with the merger and with the office move, none of this would be possible without the support and encouragement from our membership. Everyone is so positive and supportive it makes our work easy.
A special thank you to Judy Falk, store committee chair, and her committee for their outstanding guidance during this time.

There is only one more thing I need everyone to do to make this a successful move: Come and visit the store. You can shop. You can donate. You can do both at the same time!! The doors open for business at Noon sharp, this Sunday, January 19. Please take some time to stop by.  Scroll down for the address. There will be a grand reopening celebration on Sunday, May 4….after we thaw.

The Book and Author Luncheon planning is underway and will be a great one you don’t want to miss. Save the date, Monday, April 28. The event will be held at the Westin North Shore Hotel in Wheeling. Our book will be "Out of Chaos, Hidden Children from the Holocaust." This book has intriguing stories of survival and many of them are from our members. We will hear from the editor as well as some of our members whose stories are in the book. Our honoree for the event will be Harriet Goldberg.

And lastly, mark your calendars now for our Walk for Life 3K on Sunday, June 29. There is so much going on. It’s making me feel great on a dreary day.

 Have a wonderful weekend and a Shabbat Shalom,

Michele Rubin
Chapter President

The Next Generation:
Getting Your Granddaughter Interested in Hadassah

It may seem like young women today don’t do much besides flit from one thing to the next. On social media. On their cell phones, on a tablet, on a laptop – in a world that has gotten a lot faster and a lot smaller. But the truth is that this generation wants to be as involved as any other in giving, in philanthropy and in service, but on their terms.

That’s why Hadassah Chicago-North Shore Chapter has two brand new groups, Atid and Evanston-Skokie, that offer a fresh new look at an old friend: Hadassah. Atid means "future" and is for women in their 20s and 30s in the city while Evanston-Skokie is for 30s to mid-40s in the northern suburbs. Combining the tradition and culture of Hadassah with the newfound avenues for increasing advocacy and activism, these groups will offer women in this age group:

  •  an opportunity to continue outreach to the land and people of Israel;
  • a chance to reconnect with their Jewish identity;
  • a hub for personal growth, education, Jewish continuity and fundraising, while preparing the next generation of leaders of Hadassah.

If you have a daughter, sister, granddaughter, niece, cousin, friend of the family – or perhaps even yourself – who may be a good fit for either dynamic new group, contact us by phone at 847-205-1900 or email us at chicago-northshore@hadassah.org.  Please feel free to also contact us if you would like to know more about any of Hadassah Chicago-North Shore’s groups for young women.

Hadassah Medical Organization continues ground-breaking research

Hadassah Medical Organization researchers have successfully employed human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) to halt deterioration of the retina, the specialized light-sensitive lining of the eye, in an animal model.  This represents an important step toward the future use of hESCs to treat degenerative eye diseases, such as age-related macular degeneration, which causes millions of people worldwide to lose their sight.  Clinical trials are expected to begin by the end of 2014.

Hadassah is breaking new ground using MRI imaging to diagnose cancerous lesions and to observe the body in real time as it metabolizes various molecules.  An innovator in its domain, Hadassah’s Center for Hyperpolarized MRI Molecular Imaging is using a technique called hyperpolarization to increase the sensitivity of an MRI scan 10,000 fold.  This can allow the Center to ultimately diagnose a lesion accurately enough to decide whether it requires treatment and which type, without the need for a biopsy; and to be able to understand how medications given for neuropsychiatric / degenerative conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, schizophrenia, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and severe depression function within the body and prove therapeutic.

Project News is submitted by Randy Heidenfelder, Project Information Chair and Lisa Ginsburgh.
