Letter from the President

Dear Members of Hadassah Chicago-North Shore Chapter

WOW!  Did you stop by the resale shop this week?  The new Deerfield location is open and, as with so many things you do, exceeded my expectations.

When I got there just before opening on Sunday, the first day of business, I was greeting by an excited staff.  It got even better from there when there was a line of customers outside in the cold waiting for the store to open.You may have seen the article in the Highland Park Patch titled,  "Crowds Flock to Hadassah Resale Shop." This was not an exaggeration.  There were hundreds of customers! So very exciting. Many of our members stopped by to say hi as well and some of them were put to work.  Thank you again to Judy Falk for her supreme dedication to this project and to her committee for its help and unwavering support.

The January Winter Film Series organized by our Education Vice-Presidents was a success so scroll down to look at our February and March selections.

Whew, now we can focus on our next big events the three Snowbird Reunions coming up in February and to be held in Phoenix/Scottsdale, Naples, FL and Boca Raton, FL.  Reservations are coming in and I will be at the ones in both Scottsdale and Boca and am really looking forward to celebrating our sisterhood with you.  Sorry to Naples that I won't be attending your event but I haven't learned to clone myself yet.

Also, finishing touches are being put on our Book & Author Lunch to be held at the Westin North Shore Hotel in Wheeling on Monday, April 28.  The book is Out of Chaos: Hidden Children Remember the Holocaust edited by Elaine Saphier Fox.  It's not too late to begin reading it and encouraging your book clubs to read it soon.

This would be a good weekend to make yourself a cup of hot cocoa and scroll down and make sure all the exciting dates are in your calendar.

 Have a wonderful weekend and a Shabbat Shalom,

Michele Rubin
Chapter President

The Next Generation:
Getting Your Granddaughter Interested in Hadassah

It may seem like young women today don’t do much besides flit from one thing to the next. On social media. On their cell phones, on a tablet, on a laptop – in a world that has gotten a lot faster and a lot smaller. But the truth is that this generation wants to be as involved as any other in giving, in philanthropy and in service, but on their terms.

That’s why Hadassah Chicago-North Shore Chapter has two brand new groups, Atid and Evanston-Skokie, that offer a fresh new look at an old friend: Hadassah. Atid means "future" and is for women in their 20s and 30s in the city while Evanston-Skokie is for 30s to mid-40s in the northern suburbs. Combining the tradition and culture of Hadassah with the newfound avenues for increasing advocacy and activism, these groups will offer women in this age group:

  •  an opportunity to continue outreach to the land and people of Israel;
  • a chance to reconnect with their Jewish identity;
  • a hub for personal growth, education, Jewish continuity and fundraising, while preparing the next generation of leaders of Hadassah.

If you have a daughter, sister, granddaughter, niece, cousin, friend of the family – or perhaps even yourself – who may be a good fit for either dynamic new group, contact us by phone at 847-205-1900 or email us at chicago-northshore@hadassah.org.  Please feel free to also contact us if you would like to know more about any of Hadassah Chicago-North Shore’s groups for young women.

ALS Stem Cell Trial Yielding "Impressively Positive" Findings

Hadassah Medical Organization is conducting a Phase IIa trial of NurOwn™ BrianStorm Cell Therapeutics stem therapy for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).  Prof. Dimitrios Karussis, the principal investigator, reports that the safety data are “impressively positive” and that the initial indications of clinical efficacy” are cause for optimism regarding the management of ALS and the future of cell therapies for neurodegenerative diseases in general.

Prof. Karussis, Neurologist and Director of the Multiple Sclerosis Center at Hadassah, presented some of his preliminary findings from this on-going does-escalating trial of the 24th International Symposium on ALS/MND in Milan, Italy.   MND, Motor Neuron Disease is the name given to a group of diseases in which the nerve cells (neurons) that control muscles undergo degeneration and die.

According to Prof. Karussis, although the final data are not yet available for publication because the trial is still on-going, researchers have met with only minimal and transient adverse effects, even though the patients in the study were given the treatment both intrathecally (into the cerebrospinal fluid by injection into the subarachnoid space of the spinal cord) and intramuscularly, with up to double the dose of the stem cells given in the Phase I Trial.

At the conclusion of the clinical trial, BrainStorm will release the complete set of data and corresponding analyses.
