Letter from the President

Dear Members of Hadassah Chicago-North Shore Chapter,

Only seven more weeks until spring!  Who's ready?  I'm not quite ready for winter to be over yet.  I can't let it go until the Snowbird Events in Scottsdale, Naples and Boca Raton are over!  Just another week until the two events in Scottsdale and Naples take place and only three more weeks until Boca Raton.  Reservations are coming in at a pretty good clip but there is still a spot we are saving for you.  If you are a snowbird, snowflake (a new term I learned this week!) or just vacationing get your reservation in now!  If you didn't receive an invitation and want one, just contact the office and we will give you all the information.

Our new resale shop location in Deerfield is OPEN FOR BUSINESS and doing great! I am so proud and grateful of everyone who worked so hard to make this happen.  Please stop by to donate or to buy.  Next time you see Luisa Ellenbogen, executive vice-president, ask to see her new purse she purchased at the resale shop.  She loves to show it off.  Our Book & Author chairmen are busy little bees getting the final details put together for our luncheon.  It will be held Monday, April 28 at 11:30 AM at the Westin North Sshore Hotel in Wheeling.  The book is Out of Chaos: Hidden Children Remember the Holocaust.  It will feature a panel discussion comprised of the editor Elaine Saphier Fox and some of the children highlighted in this book who are our very own Hadassah members.  Our honoree for the day will be Harriet Goldberg.  Please don't miss this wonderful and worthy event!!!  There will be no separate invitation.  It will be embedded on the chapter spring bulletin that will be mailed in about a month.  So watch your mail!

Have a wonderful weekend and a Shabbat Shalom, and stock up on rock salt before the snow starts (again),

Michele

Michele Rubin
Chapter President

PROJECT NEWS

Is it Indigestion?  Or a Heart Attack?

Warning Signs of a Heart Attack:

v Chest pain, discomfort, squeezing or pressure

v Unusual upper body pain or discomfort

v Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing

v Breaking out in a cold sweat

v Unusual or unexplained fatigue

v Nausea or vomiting

v Light-headedness or sudden dizziness

DIAL 9 – 1 -1  IMMEDIATELY.  Don’t wait, don’t say, “it’s nothing.”    You could die.   Have a medical professional examine you as soon as possible.

Symptoms are different for women than men.  From the Mayo Clinic website:

The most common heart attack symptom in women is some type of pain, pressure or discomfort in the chest. But it's not always severe or even the most prominent symptom, particularly in women. These symptoms are more subtle than the obvious crushing chest pain often associated with heart attacks. This may be because women tend to have blockages not only in their main arteries, but also in the smaller arteries that supply blood to the heart — a condition called small vessel heart disease or microvascular disease.    Many women tend to show up in emergency rooms after much heart damage has already occurred because their symptoms are not those typically associated with a heart attack. If you experience these symptoms or think you're having a heart attack, call for emergency medical help immediately. Don't drive yourself to the emergency room unless you have no other options.”

Heart Disease is the # 1 cause of death among women worldwide.  One in three women over the age of 20 has some form of cardiovascular disease.     Risk Factors for a Heart Attack- which you cannot control:    Family history of early onset heart disease.  Over age 55 for women, congenital heart defects, race/ethnicity.

Risk Factors YOU Can control:

Smoking, high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol and high triglyceride levels, poor eating habits, lack of physical activity, diabetes and pre-diabetes, alcohol consumption and stress.
