Letter from the President

Dear Members of Hadassah Chicago-North Shore Chapter,

The time is nearing for the biggest event of the year! We are expecting a great turnout with a great program for Heart to Heart: Every Beat Counts.

This will really be our premier event and I'm so proud of the team that's been working very hard putting it together. Looking forward to seeing you there!

In addition, invitations were mailed this week for the Israel Bonds Brunch on December 2 honoring Edith and Amos Turner. The invitation went to the board and members of Edith's group only but everyone is welcome. See more info below and I'll see you there.

We are almost getting ready to wind down for a bit and go into programming hibernation as we prepare for the holiday season but we never really hibernate, do we? The board is busy preparing for 2014 and you'll love what we have planned for you!

Have a wonderful weekend and a Shabbat Shalom,

Michele Rubin
Chapter President

Hadassah Chicago-North Shore is Growing!

We're starting new groups and programs!

Atid (meaning "future") is an exciting new group for women in their 20's and 30's living in the city. Group events (meeting evenings in the city) will include opportunities for personal growth, education, advocacy, Jewish continuity and fundraising. Atid is being formed in keeping with Hadassah's mission and its commitment to its partnership with the land and people of Israel, and in order to strengthen Hadassah's future. If you or someone you know may be interested in this group, please contact Nancy Spivak at nspivak@hadassah.org.

Training Wheels/Al Galgalim is returning to the northern suburbs for families with children ages 1-5 who wish to partner in discovering the joys of being Jewish. Through songs, games, stories, crafts and more, families will learn about Jewish holidays, rituals, Shabbat and more in a fun, relaxed setting. Sessions will take place throughout the year on Sunday mornings. If you or someone you know may be interested in this group, please contact Nancy Spivak at nspivak@hadassah.org.

New Research Trials Offer Hope for Patients with ALS

Researchers at Hadassah have demonstrated that they are able to stop the progression of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), a condition where groups of nerve cells degenerate and die without hope of return.

New research trials at Hadassah Hospital have shown that the disease can be stopped, and the patient’s muscle condition can even be improved. The treatment uses stem cell transplants of cells derived from the patients which have undergone a revolutionary treatment.

ALS is considered to be one of the most complex diseases to treat, as the patient’s muscles gradually and incrementally cease to function, resulting in death several years later. As of now there is no cure for this disease. That is the reason why this research, led by Professor Dimitri Krossis of Neurology at the Hadassah hospital, is excellent news for patients with this disease.

This new treatment was developed by the Israeli company Brainstorm Cell Therapeutics, which announced the results of the successful trials on the New York Stock Exchange. The treatment is the result of research by Professor Eldad Melamed and Professor Daniel Ofen of the University of Tel Aviv. The company is expected to finish the second stage of testing in Israel within a few weeks, and continue the research in the United States.

"We take cells from the bone marrow, we clean them and make them replicate in large numbers," explained Professor Melamed. "We then treat them chemically, which converts them into nerve cells, and we inject them into the spinal cord and muscles. These nerve cells then produce growth hormone which supports existing nerve cells, and this can slow and even stop the degeneration."
