Letter from the President

Dear Members of Hadassah Chicago-North Shore Chapter,

Well, we are still basking in the glow of our highly successful Heart to Heart Fundraiser and are already planning something wonderful for next fall.

Chapter events will be a little slower for the next couple of months as groups are in high gear with the installation and Youth Aliyah luncheons but we do have a couple of activities you may be interested in.

Next Monday, November 18, is our book review of the book Killing Kennedy. For any of you who happened to have seen it, this book was made into a movie that aired last weekend. As we approach the 50th anniversary of President Kennedy's assassination, this is a moving way to mark that tragic moment in American history.  And on Monday, December 2nd, we will be holding our Hadassah-Israel Bonds Brunch. It will be held at the chapter office and honor Highland Park Group member Edith and Amos Turner. Don't forget to RSVP to this one soon so we are prepared for you.

On top of all that, we are preparing for our once-in-a-lifetime Thanksgiving/Hanukkah all in one holiday. Sweet potato latkes with cranberry applesauce anyone???

Have a wonderful weekend and a Shabbat Shalom,

Michele

 Michele Rubin
Chapter President

Hadassah Chicago-North Shore is Growing!

We're starting new groups and programs!

Atid (meaning "future") is an exciting new group for women in their 20's and 30's living in the city. Group events (meeting evenings in the city) will include opportunities for personal growth, education, advocacy, Jewish continuity and fundraising. Atid is being formed in keeping with Hadassah's mission and its commitment to its partnership with the land and people of Israel, and in order to strengthen Hadassah's future. If you or someone you know may be interested in this group, please contact Nancy Spivak at nspivak@hadassah.org.

Training Wheels/Al Galgalim is returning to the northern suburbs for families with children ages 1-5 who wish to partner in discovering the joys of being Jewish. Through songs, games, stories, crafts and more, families will learn about Jewish holidays, rituals, Shabbat and more in a fun, relaxed setting. Sessions will take place throughout the year on Sunday mornings. If you or someone you know may be interested in this group, please contact Nancy Spivak at nspivak@hadassah.org.

Youth Aliyah- Saving the World- One Child at a Time

Doron is a 10th grade student, who joined one of our villages a few years ago. The school reported that he was a smart boy, who answered correctly in class, but avoided reading and writing and did not take any exams. He was diagnosed, and the staff learned he had severe reading and writing disabilities. For years, he had managed to hide his difficulty at school, to the detriment of his education.

Following the evaluation, the staff showed Doron by means of the high marks he got in the intelligence test, just how bright he is. They strengthened his self confidence, explained to him about his learning disabilities, and offered him assistance.

The staff recommended he take oral exams, and for the first time in his life- he received high marks. He became a different person: his self esteem improved dramatically, as did his social life and his ability to read and write. He could finally realize his abilities and make a mark for himself in the world. He told his teachers, "The women of Hadassah and all their kindness has changed my life in ways I could never even dream and I will never forget them."
