Letter from the President

Dear Members of Hadassah Chicago-North Shore Chapter,

As we enter into our Thanksgiving preparations we also are in the midst of our Hannukah preparations.  We’ve never said that before and we’ll never say it again.  So, this is the only time you have to be this fermished.

If you haven’t flown away for the winter yet, please come to our Israel Bonds Brunch on Monday, December 2.  RSVP now so we are ready for you!

On December 4, we say goodbye to our Hattie Callner Group.   This group has been around for many years and done remarkable work on behalf of Hadassah.  Members that are still active are being transferred into the group of their choice and members no longer active are being transferred into our Golda Meir Group.  We thank this group and its members for their years of service and devotion to Hadassah and will celebrate at a Hannukah party just for them.

We are also working hard at making a wonderful programming calendar for 2014 so expect details soon.  There will be no Scroll next week due to the holiday but we’ll be back the week after.

Wishing you a Happy Hannukah, a Happy Thanksgiving, and a long holiday weekend filled with family, love and joy.

 Shabbat Shalom,

 Michele Rubin
Chapter President

Hadassah UK and Christie's Partner in David Bomberg Art Auction

The sale of David Bomberg pictures at a Christies Auction in London on Nov. 21, 2013 will contribute to the completion of Hadassah's $370 million, 19-story surgical tower in Jerusalem that opened last year. It is a continuation of the "Chagall Project" partnership between Hadassah and Christie's. Through this collaboration sponsorship is offered to the beautiful stained glass windows of the Abbell Synagogue in the Hadassah Ein Kerem campus, and art works are donated for sale.

Bomberg was one of the most audacious of the exceptional generation of artists who studied at the Slade School of Art.

It is unusual to have such a selection of works by one artist offered in a single sale. The paintings are all fresh to the market and offer a rare opportunity to own an original work by an important master of the 20th century. A significant part of the proceeds from this Bomberg sale will be donated to Hadassah.

Viewing will take place Nov. 17-20 at Christie's, King Street, London at 10:30 a.m. London time. Buyers from around the world are welcome to participate. You are invited to bid on-line. Please forward this information to anyone you may feel may have an interest in this sale.

For more information, please visit the Hadassah UK website here.

Hadassah Chicago-North Shore is Growing!

We're starting new groups and programs!

Atid (meaning "future") is an exciting new group for women in their 20's and 30's living in the city. Group events (meeting evenings in the city) will include opportunities for personal growth, education, advocacy, Jewish continuity and fundraising. Atid is being formed in keeping with Hadassah's mission and its commitment to its partnership with the land and people of Israel, and in order to strengthen Hadassah's future. If you or someone you know may be interested in this group, please contact Nancy Spivak at nspivak@hadassah.org.

Training Wheels/Al Galgalim is returning to the northern suburbs for families with children ages 1-5 who wish to partner in discovering the joys of being Jewish. Through songs, games, stories, crafts and more, families will learn about Jewish holidays, rituals, Shabbat and more in a fun, relaxed setting. Sessions will take place throughout the year on Sunday mornings. If you or someone you know may be interested in this group, please contact Nancy Spivak at nspivak@hadassah.org.

Hadassah Nurse Heads the IDF Operating Theater in Philippines

As they have done so often in times of disaster throughout the world, the Israelis are on the ground in the Philippines, treating a population brutalized by Typhoon Haiyan.

Ruven Gelfond, head operating room nurse at Hadassah Medical Organization in Mount Scopus, is in charge of the operating theater set up by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) in the city of Bogo. "We are a light in the darkness of this poor, badly damaged region," said Gelfond.

From the typhoon-ravaged Philippines, Gelfond described a man who asked if the Israeli medical team could get rid of a large eye obstruction—even though it wasn't a direct result of the typhoon. He couldn't see, and he heard that the Israelis might help him.

For that, the doctor would need a speculum—not one of the tools that was brought along from Israel. So Gelfond built one. "We were able to turn on the light for this patient who couldn't see before the surgery," he said.

Gelfond has a history of mobilizing when disaster strikes. He is a part of the IDF medical rescue unit, and when the devastating earthquake rocked Haiti in 2010, Gelfond was there. Now, seeing the destruction in the Philippines, he was one of the first Israeli soldiers to arrive—helping to build the tent city hospital where over 1,300 patients have already been seen.
