Letter from the President

Dear Members of Hadassah Chicago-North Shore Chapter,
Well, some of you have already flown the coop and are nice and toasty warm in Florida, Arizona and California.  Others of us are, well, just cold.  For those of you who did venture out, you enjoyed a wonderful talk by the president of Hadassah Academic College, Professor Bertold Fridlender.  Those of us who came learned so much and are so impressed by the innovative work being done there.  We were re-inspired.
Mazel Tov to our new group boards and our chapter board, many of whom recently had their installations or who will have them soon.  It is our dedicated volunteers that make us so special and make it possible for Hadassah to do all the good work that it does.  Most of you should have received our Thanks-a-Latke end of year letter.  We have received a wonderful response so far and know that you will want to get your donation in before year-end.  You can choose where your donation goes so go find it right now and send it in.  I'd love for every member to participate in this someway so we can all be part of the miracles of Hadassah.

Stay warm and have a  Shabbat Shalom,

 Michele Rubin
Chapter President

Hadassah Chicago-North Shore is Growing!

We're starting new groups and programs!

Atid (meaning "future") is an exciting new group for women in their 20's and 30's living in the city. Group events (meeting evenings in the city) will include opportunities for personal growth, education, advocacy, Jewish continuity and fundraising. Atid is being formed in keeping with Hadassah's mission and its commitment to its partnership with the land and people of Israel, and in order to strengthen Hadassah's future. If you or someone you know may be interested in this group, please contact Nancy Spivak at nspivak@hadassah.org.

Training Wheels/Al Galgalim is returning to the northern suburbs for families with children ages 1-5 who wish to partner in discovering the joys of being Jewish. Through songs, games, stories, crafts and more, families will learn about Jewish holidays, rituals, Shabbat and more in a fun, relaxed setting. Sessions will take place throughout the year on Sunday mornings. If you or someone you know may be interested in this group, please contact Nancy Spivak at nspivak@hadassah.org.

Beating brain tumors is personal for Hadassah researcher

Brain tumor. Fewer words are more frightening. For Regina Golan-Gerstl, Ph.D., a researcher at our medical school, the fight against brain cancer is close-up and personal. Her beloved mother Esther Gerstl died of the disease. Imagine her feeling when she succeeded in identifying a genetic protein directly involved in the development of the glioblastoma, the most prevalent brain cancer.

"…We found mechanisms with which cells communicate with each other." Golan-Gerstl explained that the discovery concerns "splicing," a mechanism like editing reels of film, literally cutting and putting together like old reels of film, except these are elements of RNA, ribonucleic acid.

"When a person is sick, the splicing mechanism doesn't work in the same way," she said. "There are proteins involved in this alternative splicing. One turns out to be a gene which is an activist in developing cancer. If this gene is turned off, then the tumors in mice are reduced. Our first success was with brain cancer. Further investigation is taking place vis a vis other metastaticcancers, such as breast cancer. We're working on shutting it down at a molecular level, and we will be tackling this with the neuro-oncology department at Hadassah."

The molecular discovery provide an avenue for diagnosis and treatment; 22,000 Americans are diagnosed with brain cancer every year.
