Letter from the President

Dear Members of Hadassah Chicago-North Shore Chapter,

I haven't talked to you in a couple of weeks and so much has happened since then.  I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving. We had a double blessing this year because we got to throw Hannukah into the mix.  Now that the holidays are over and you are full of turkey and latkes we can all sit back and relax.

This week was a true week of celebration.  We held our Hadassah Israel Bonds Brunch this past Monday and honored Edith and Amos Turner.  There was a lot of good feelings in the room and a lot of bonds sold to support our beloved Israel.  Yasher Koach to Marlene Kaplan for chairing this event.

Next week will also be a great one at Hadassah.  I know it's short notice but we have the opportunity to host a visit from Professor Bertrand Fridlander, director of Hadassah Academic College.  If you haven't flown away for the winter yet, please try to stop by the office Wednesday, December 11 at 10AM for coffee and...hear about all the wonderful work at the college.

Then we are going to quiet down for a bit while we wrap up a fabulously successful 2013.  Speaking of wrapping up, our end of year solicitation letter was mailed this week so you should be receiving it soon.  I know you are very generous all year long but if you could consider an additional donation to finish the year off with a bang, I'd appreciate it as would all the thousands of people we help both in Israel and the U.S.

Have a wonderful holiday-free weekend and a Shabbat Shalom,

Michele

 Michele Rubin
Chapter President

Hadassah Chicago-North Shore is Growing!

We're starting new groups and programs!

Atid (meaning "future") is an exciting new group for women in their 20's and 30's living in the city. Group events (meeting evenings in the city) will include opportunities for personal growth, education, advocacy, Jewish continuity and fundraising. Atid is being formed in keeping with Hadassah's mission and its commitment to its partnership with the land and people of Israel, and in order to strengthen Hadassah's future. If you or someone you know may be interested in this group, please contact Nancy Spivak at nspivak@hadassah.org.

Training Wheels/Al Galgalim is returning to the northern suburbs for families with children ages 1-5 who wish to partner in discovering the joys of being Jewish. Through songs, games, stories, crafts and more, families will learn about Jewish holidays, rituals, Shabbat and more in a fun, relaxed setting. Sessions will take place throughout the year on Sunday mornings. If you or someone you know may be interested in this group, please contact Nancy Spivak at nspivak@hadassah.org.

Project News

Hadassah College Jerusalem Tapped to Lead Multinational Project

For the first time ever, an Israeli college has been tapped to lead a multinational scientific project funded by the European Union. The institution? Hadassah College Jerusalem.

The Joint Management Authority of the European Neighbourhood and Partnership Instrument awarded HCJ 2 million euros to shepherd the BioXplore project, in partnership with the Biodiversity and Environmental Research Center of the Palestinian Authority, Leitat Technological Center in Spain and the Hellenic Regional Development Center in Greece. Rutgers University in New Jersey and North Carolina State University will also participate.

Professor Bertold Fridlender, director of HCJ’s Biotechnology Department, is the driving force behind the project. "The goal of [BioXplore] is to identify endemic plants from the Mediterranean area," he explained, "which contain compounds that may be valuable for products such as pharmaceuticals, food additives, cosmetics and others. This collaborative research will promote social and financial developments in the Mediterranean Sea Basin Area."

For more details, go to Hadassah Magazine's website at www.hadassahmagazine.org
