Letter from the President

Dear Members of Hadassah Chicago-North Shore Chapter,

I am writing on my weekend "off" from attending Snowbird events.

Last weekend, our chapter held successful Snowbird Reunions in both Scottsdale, Arizona and Naples, Florida.  People reconnected and played Jewish Geography and had such a good time they are already beginning plans for next year!  Next weekend I will attend the Snowbird Reunion in Boca Raton, FL and expect an equally wonderful event. It's sure a tough job, having to travel to Florida and Arizona in the middle of this horrible winter, but someone has to do it.

Speaking of successful events, I am beginning to get very excited about the Book & Author Luncheon on April 28.  I hope you've marked your calendar.  The resale shop is thriving and beautiful.  The weather is supposed to be a balmy 37 next week so I hope it will be easier for you to stop by and see all the great deals!  The coupon sent to you in the mail expires on February 28 so don't lollygag any longer.  Lastly, if someone you know reports that they are not receiving the Scroll, tell them to call the office and give us their email address.  Or better yet, take their email address and call it in for them.

Have a wonderful weekend and a Shabbat Shalom,

Michele

Michele Rubin
Chapter President

The Hadassah Chicago-North Shore Chapter Office will be CLOSED Monday, Feb. 17 in observance of President's day. Regular office hours will resume Tuesday, Feb. 18.

Hadassah Northwest Chapter Hosts Buffalo Grove Man Speaking About Challenges of Being Deaf in a Hearing World\

The Northwest Chapter will welcome Buffalo Grove resident Lew Golan, who is completely deaf, to speak about his book "Reading Between the Lips: A Totally Deaf Man Makes It in the Mainstream."

In a candid celebration of the advantages (and occasional pitfalls) of communicating orally by speaking and lip reading, Lew shows that deafness is not an impenetrable barrier to making it in the hearing world.

Join the Northwest Chapter for an interesting presentation, free of charge, at 7 p.m. Feb. 19 in the Buffalo Grove Youth Center, 50 1/2 Raupp Blvd. behind Village Hall. For more information, call 847-749-2064.

Not (Just) Your Bubbe's Hadassah:
New Chicago-North Shore Groups Offer Activities, Growth for Young Women

A traditional Hadassah group may offer mah jongg tournaments and book club meetings in a culture and tradition that's as comforting and familiar as chicken soup. But Hadassah Chicago-North Shore is expanding to groups that fuse culture and tradition with a fresh appeal in a world that now communicates via social media and smartphones but still has the need for volunteerism and charitable giving.

That's why Hadassah Chicago-North Shore Chapter has two brand new groups, Atid and Evanston-Skokie, that offer a fresh new look at an old friend: Hadassah. Atid means "future" and is for women in their 20s and 30s in the city while Evanston-Skokie is for 30s to mid-40s in the northern suburbs. Combining the tradition and culture of Hadassah with the newfound avenues for increasing advocacy and activism, these groups will offer women in this age group:

  • an opportunity to continue outreach to the land and people of Israel;
  • a chance to reconnect with their Jewish identity;
  • a hub for personal growth, education, Jewish continuity and fundraising, while preparing the next generation of leaders of Hadassah.

If you have a daughter, sister, granddaughter, niece, cousin, friend of the family - or perhaps even yourself - who may be a good fit for either dynamic new group, contact us by phone at 847-205-1900 or email us at chicago-northshore@hadassah.org. Please feel free to also contact us if you would like to know more about any of Hadassah Chicago-North Shore's groups for young women.

PROJECT NEWS

US Cannabis Activist Meets Hadassah's Cannabis Research Pioneer

Cancer Survivor, Cannabis Activist, and Founder of the Beverly Hill Cannabis Club Cheryl Shuman recently visited Israel to meet with Cannabis Research Pioneer Prof. Raphael Mechoulam of the Hadassah-Hebrew University Faculty of Medicine, whose work provided the basis for the medical community’s embrace of medical marijuana (cannabis). Ms. Shuman, who was diagnosed with advanced ovarian cancer many years ago, credits cannabis with bringing her back from the brink of death.

“Much of our work was begun half a century ago,” says Prof. Mechoulam. His interest in cannabis was sparked after he returned from a post-doctoral fellowship at the Rockefeller Institute in New York and became interested in the intersection of chemistry and biology. “Cannabis,” he says, “was ripe for investigation.”

Fluent in a variety of European languages, Prof. Mechoulam read 19th century papers about the plant’s potential. The Israeli police gave him five kilos of high-quality Lebanese hashish that they had apprehended from a smuggler. He coined a new term, “cannabinoids” (referring to the active constituents of cannabis) and isolated first CBD, a non-psychoactive constituent which, according to research at Hadassah, reduced sugar levels in diabetes-prone mice and ameliorated effects of heart ischemia (inadequate blood supply). Then he isolated THC, the psychoactive constituent, as well as half a dozen other cannabinoids.

Prof. Mechoulam notes that pharmaceutical companies have been reluctant to fund clinical trials because marijuana use is controversial and impossible to patent.

Yet, he says, “Cannabis remains a medical treasure trove which waits to be discovered.”

Dr. Elyad Davidson, who heads Hadassah’s Pain Clinic, does offer cannabis to his patients. He reports, however, that “we’re still pre-clinical, which means that although cannabis is being used, we’re guessing on its efficacy and safety. Pain isn’t something you can quantify, so we rely on the reliability of patient reports.”
