Letter from the President

Dear Members of Hadassah Chicago-North Shore Chapter,

 Greetings from sunny Florida!   You gotta be quick to keep up with me.  I am here for the Snowbird reunion on Sunday.  I’m so excited!  It’s going to be a great event and I’m so glad I will be there.

March will be kind of lonely for me but I’ll be able to get all caught up at home and at the chapter office.  The March edition of the winter film series will be a good distraction and I hope to see many of you there.

Don’t forget about the Book & Author Luncheon on April 28.  We are putting the finishing touches on our spring bulletin and it should be at the printer by the end of the month.  The resale shop is thriving thanks to everyone’s support in both donations and volunteer hours.

Our Hadassah chapter is blessed in so many ways.  Lots more exciting programming ahead!  You know the drill, scroll down to see all the exciting things happening and don’t forget, you are welcome to attend a program from another group any time!

Have a wonderful weekend and a Shabbat Shalom,

Michele Rubin
Chapter President

Not (Just) Your Bubbe's Hadassah:
New Chicago-North Shore Groups Offer Activities, Growth for Young Women

A traditional Hadassah group may offer mah jongg tournaments and book club meetings in a culture and tradition that's as comforting and familiar as chicken soup. But Hadassah Chicago-North Shore is expanding to groups that fuse culture and tradition with a fresh appeal in a world that now communicates via social media and smartphones but still has the need for volunteerism and charitable giving.

That's why Hadassah Chicago-North Shore Chapter has two brand new groups, Atid and Evanston-Skokie, that offer a fresh new look at an old friend: Hadassah. Atid means "future" and is for women in their 20s and 30s in the city while Evanston-Skokie is for 30s to mid-40s in the northern suburbs. Combining the tradition and culture of Hadassah with the newfound avenues for increasing advocacy and activism, these groups will offer women in this age group:

  • an opportunity to continue outreach to the land and people of Israel;
  • a chance to reconnect with their Jewish identity;
  • a hub for personal growth, education, Jewish continuity and fundraising, while preparing the next generation of leaders of Hadassah.

If you have a daughter, sister, granddaughter, niece, cousin, friend of the family - or perhaps even yourself - who may be a good fit for either dynamic new group, contact us by phone at 847-205-1900 or email us at chicago-northshore@hadassah.org. Please feel free to also contact us if you would like to know more about any of Hadassah Chicago-North Shore's groups for young women.

Deep Sequencing Analysis Leads to Major Genetic Discoveries at Hadassah

Using a deep sequencing analyzer, Prof. Orly Elpeleg, Director of the Hadassah Medical Organization's Department of Genetic and Metabolic Diseases, and her colleagues have determined the sequence of millions of DNA fragments simultaneously -- 8,000 times the capacity of the former generation of DNA sequencing machines. This has enabled Hadassah's researchers to identify important gene mutations that cause severe metabolic diseases and to counteract their devastating effects.

In the last three years alone, Prof. Elpeleg and her team have identified 30 genes responsible for some of the most disabling -- and sometimes deadly -- children's diseases, making Hadassah one of the top 10 centers in the world to identify disease-causing gene mutations. For example, Hadassah researchers discovered a protein gene responsible for a rare form of infant paralysis affecting Jews who originally came from North Africa. Prof. Dror Mevorach, Director of Hadassah's Center for Research in Rheumatology, has worked on this same protein for the past 15 years. He proposed treating these infants with a synthetic experiemental drug that has proven effective in fighting a similar rare disease. The first four babies with this paralysis have been given this drug, yielding very good results.

Project News is submitted by Randy Heidenfelder, Project Information Chair and Lisa Ginsburgh.
