Letter from the President

Dear Members of Hadassah Chicago-North Shore Chapter,

Greetings from sunny Scottsdale! I am so excited to be here to attend the inaugural Scottsdale/Phoenix Snowbird Reunion.

I am looking forward to meeting some  members I may not know and share with them all the good things happening up here in snowy Chicagoland!!!

If you are stuck here and can dig yourselves out, don't miss our February selection for our winter film series on Shalom Aleichem. Also, mark your calendars for two exciting events.

Our Book & Author Luncheon will be held on Monday, April 28. Scroll down for details. Also, so exciting, our first ever chapter conference will be held on Monday, May 19. This is the brainchild of Leadership Vice-Presidents Greta Rothschild and Sharon Lasko. Yasher Koach to them!! This conference is open to everyone and will feature sessions on everything from explaining what social media is to hearing past national president Bonnie Lipton tell stories of world leaders she has met to your very own chapter president, me, solving your pre-submitted problems. There's something for everyone and you don't need to be active or have a position or anything.

Everyone is welcome to mark your calendar now and reservations sheets will be in the chapter bulletin that will be mailed to your home in a few short weeks.

Stay warm, have a wonderful weekend and a Shabbat Shalom,

Michele Rubin
Chapter President

Hadassah Northwest Chapter Hosts Buffalo Grove Man Speaking About Challenges of Being Deaf in a Hearing World\

The Northwest Chapter will welcome Buffalo Grove resident Lew Golan, who is completely deaf, to speak about his book "Reading Between the Lips: A Totally Deaf Man Makes It in the Mainstream."

In a candid celebration of the advantages (and occasional pitfalls) of communicating orally by speaking and lip reading, Lew shows that deafness is not an impenetrable barrier to making it in the hearing world.

Join the Northwest Chapter for an interesting presentation, free of charge, at 7 p.m. Feb. 19 in the Buffalo Grove Youth Center, 50 1/2 Raupp Blvd. behind Village Hall. For more information, call 847-749-2064.

For more information, contact Hadassah Travel/Da'at Travel at 888-811-2812 or email customerservice@daattravel.com.

Not (Just) Your Bubbe's Hadassah:
New Chicago-North Shore Groups Offer Activities, Growth for Young Women

A traditional Hadassah group may offer mah jongg tournaments and book club meetings in a culture and tradition that's as comforting and familiar as chicken soup. But Hadassah Chicago-North Shore is expanding to groups that fuse culture and tradition with a fresh appeal in a world that now communicates via social media and smartphones but still has the need for volunteerism and charitable giving.

That's why Hadassah Chicago-North Shore Chapter has two brand new groups, Atid and Evanston-Skokie, that offer a fresh new look at an old friend: Hadassah. Atid means "future" and is for women in their 20s and 30s in the city while Evanston-Skokie is for 30s to mid-40s in the northern suburbs. Combining the tradition and culture of Hadassah with the newfound avenues for increasing advocacy and activism, these groups will offer women in this age group:

  • an opportunity to continue outreach to the land and people of Israel;
  • a chance to reconnect with their Jewish identity;
  • a hub for personal growth, education, Jewish continuity and fundraising, while preparing the next generation of leaders of Hadassah.

If you have a daughter, sister, granddaughter, niece, cousin, friend of the family - or perhaps even yourself - who may be a good fit for either dynamic new group, contact us by phone at 847-205-1900 or email us at chicago-northshore@hadassah.org. Please feel free to also contact us if you would like to know more about any of Hadassah Chicago-North Shore's groups for young women.

Made in Israel - Student of Hadassah Academic College Designs Missile-Proof Backpack

Ms. Hila Raam, a 27-year-old graduate of Inclusive Industrial Design from Yehud, has created an original dual purpose backpack that can shield from all types of fragments, including ballistics or even a missile.

The 2.5 kilo backpack can be used for everyday carrying, but also doubles as a bullet-proof shield in case of attack.

"In thinking about my project, I asked myself how I can develop a product that protects people and gives them a sense of security," Raam explains. "The same backpack can serve the everyday needs of high school or college students as well as protect them in times of trouble."

The prototype backpack has attracted attention from manufacturers interested in producing the product for use in Israel and abroad.

Project News is submitted by Randy Heidenfelder, Project Information Chair and Lisa Ginsburgh.
