Letter from the President

Dear Members of Hadassah Chicago-North Shore Chapter,

In our last weekend of winter we celebrate the festive holiday of Purim.  This is a special holiday for the Jewish people as it commemorates our salvation from destruction, a common theme among our holidays.

This one is different because we get to dress in costume, sing and dance, and eat lots of yummy hamentashen.  This is also a special holiday for Hadassah, the Women's Zionist Organization of America and all of us because Hadassah was founded during the Purim season.  As we all know, Esther is the heroine of the Purim story but we may not know that Hadassah was Esther's Hebrew name and that is why Henrietta Szold and her study group chose it to be our name.

This Purim we celebrate Hadassah's 102nd birthday!  There are four mitzvot that should be performed on Purim: 1. Hear the megillah read; 2. Give to the needy (hint hint); 3. Send at least two kinds of food, commonly referred to as mishloach manot, to friends; 4. Eat and drink and celebrate.  Purim is one of the few times in the Talmud where we are told we are obligated to drink so I want everyone to crack open that Manischewitz you've been saving for a special occasion!  I don't know about you, but Purim always starts my planning for Pesach which is in one short month so let the countdown begin!

There is so much to squeeze in between now and then.  Our snowbirds will fly home and I have missed them so much.  The spring bulletin was mailed this week so you should be getting them any day now.  Between the bulletin and this weekly email you will find out all you need to know about the wonderful events going on both in the chapter and among the groups.

Remember, any group event you see on this scroll is open to everyone regardless of what group you belong to, so don't hesitate to RSVP for something if it sounds interesting to you.  Have a wonderful wonderful weekend celebrating the most festive of holidays.

Shabbat Shalom and Chag Sameach Purim!

Through an Architect's Eyes: Hadassah Hospital at Ein Kerem

From San Diego Jewish World:

JERUSALEM–Not long ago I was privileged to hear renowned architect Arthur Spector give a talk about the new Hadassah Hospital building at Ein Kerem designed by his firm. Leaving aside the financial aspect of the building, which has aroused some controversy, Spector proceeded to provide his audience with a fascinating insight into the inner workings of the architectural process.

Illustrating his talk with many slides, Spector described the process of planning and erecting the building, pointing out the many aspects involved in adhering to the ecological principles of sustainable construction. Putting up a ‘green’ building requires paying attention to a myriad of technical features, such as using renewable energy (wind, sun), minimizing carbon pollution, using materials efficiently, maintaining indoor air quality (no simple matter in a hospital) and minimizing the negative impact on the environment. In this instance the process involved consulting numerous experts in a wide variety of fields, which Spector has calculated as accounting for 1,300 meetings with 36 consultants. The role of the architect is to manage all the information without losing the soul of the design, as embodied in the slogan “architecture is the marriage of the art of the dream with the art of the real.”
