Letter from the President

Dear Members of Hadassah Chicago-North Shore Chapter,

Well, it's finally here!  Pesach!  The holiday is always special to me because the first days of spring also happen now and I enjoy cooking with the windows open after months of keeping the doors and windows shut.  It just makes me happy.

The response to the Book & Author Luncheon also makes me happy.  We are at 250 attendees and growing every day.  Don't miss your opportunity to hear the important stories of our own Hadassah sisters who survived as hidden children during the Holocaust.  Plus, you will enjoy a yummy chicken or vegetarian lunch!  Since April 28 is Yom HaShoah, these stories from the book "Out of Chaos" are particularly relevant.  We are also honoring Harriet Goldberg, who is so deserving of this recognition.  Reservation forms are on the last page of your spring bulletin.

We celebrate Yom Ha'atzmaut on Monday, May 5 when we will hear Leah Reicin review the book "Like Dreamers."  Also on May 5, we will launch our website to register and/or donate (hint, hint) for our 3rd Annual Walk for Life 3K to be held on Sunday, June 29 at the beautiful Chicago Botanic Garden in Glencoe.  The registration fee includes admission to the Garden and parking, so come for the Walk and stay all day.

We will hold our first Hadassah Impact Conference on May 19.  This is for everyone, not just leadership.  Please scroll down to see the list of sessions.  Register for one or register for several; find what interests you.  Remember, I have challenged all of you to submit a question to me that will stump me.  Can I be stumped???

Summer Camp is right around the corner and the details and registration information for this summer’s "Where in the World?" sessions are coming soon.  This one is already getting a lot of buzz so you will want to get your registration in early.

My appreciation to all the wonderful chairmen who put these programs together.  There's so much more,  so take a minute to scroll down while your brisket cooks.

Chag Sameach Pesach to each and every one of you.  My wish for you is a holiday full of family and joy.

Michele Rubin
Chapter President

Play Examining Life of Henrietta Szold Comes to Chicago

On Holy Ground is a combination of two one-act plays by Stephanie Liss: Daughter of My People which tells the story of an older woman - the founder of Hadassah - deeply in love for the first time with a much younger man; and Jihad, which examines the Israeli-Palestinian conflict from the stories of two mothers, one living in an Israeli settlement and the other in a Palestinian area.

For Henrietta's story, Liss interviewed one of the nurses who took care of her in her last years. For Jihad, Liss went underground with Hamas and PLO as well as the Israeli Army.

The show runs May 5 - May 14 at the National Pastime Theater in the Preston Bradley Center, 941 W. Lawrence - Chicago. Tickets are $20. Click here to read more about the play or to purchase tickets.

"Israel: The Royal Tour" will air on WTTW in April

A one-hour documentary from Peter Greenberg of CBS focusing on Israel will air on WTTW on April 17, featuring Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (right, pictured with Greenberg).

Take a look at one review of "Israel: The Royal Tour" below.

Interested in a tour of Israel led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu? You’re in luck.  In the documentary "Israel: The Royal Tour," Netanyahu gives journalist Peter Greenberg a tour of the Holy Land, from the snow-topped peaks of the north to the deserts of the south. Together they float in the Dead Sea, take a boat through the Red Sea, and raft down the Jordan river. They visit the ancient site of Masada before traveling to Haifa to see the high-tech world of the Technion.

“It was a great mix from the Mediterranean Sea to the (Negev) desert. We had a lot of fun. He said that he hadn’t been on a bicycle for years because of security,” Greenberg told the Jewish Star. “So we put the bikes on the road and jumped on and were racing and the security guards ran after us.”

Netanyahu uses the tour to discuss the threat of terrorism facing the state of Israel, stressing that Israel must remain strong militarily and economically in order to protect its civilians.

Music for Medicine: How Musicians Are Easing The Pain of Patients

Illnesses often affect more than just the body. But unlike physical symptoms, emotional and psychological trauma resulting from chronic illnesses often go undiagnosed.

That’s why organizations like Israeli nonprofit Haverut (meaning friendship in Hebrew) are stepping up to bring much-needed emotional and spiritual relief to people who have been suffering from diseases for too long.

In 2007, Rachel Ettun launched Haverut in memory of her daughter Ruth Ettun, who passed away from Cystic Fybrosis in 1997,  at the age of 11. Rachel, a family therapist who specializes in work with families coping with chronic illness, loss and bereavement, focused on creative activities with her daughter, including reading, drawing, writing and other modes of personal expression.

That’s why she decided Haverut would use art and music to help patients. “We want to use the power of music and art as a bridge to cope with crises in life,” Ettun tells NoCamels. “Our vision is about connection between the spirit and medicine.”

Both guitarist Ben Barak and flutist Avshalom Eshel (pictured above) are part of the artistic Ein Karem community near Jerusalem, whose other members are also now starting to volunteer at the Hadassah Medical Center with Haverut.
