Letter from the President

Dear Members of Hadassah Chicago-North Shore Chapter,

I hope everyone had a wonderful Pesach but enough about that, time to get back to Hadassah.

Well, it's finally here!  The Annual Book & Author Luncheon is upon us and everyone is excited.  Chairmen Diane Rosenfeld and Barbara Saxton-Turek have been working non-stop this week along with our staff, to make sure every detail is attended to.  We will have an attendance of 400 people to hear the inspiring stories of our own Hadassah members who epitomize the survival of the Jewish people during the Holocaust.  We will also be honoring Harriet Goldberg who has been one of our most dedicated volunteers for many years.

Along with joy comes sadness and it is with sorrow that I inform you that the manager of our resale shop for the past four years, Robert Van Kooten, passed away this week after a 9-month battle with cancer.  A humble man who didn't want attention for his illness, he told few that he was sick so his passing is a real shock to many people.  Robert had a passion for Hadassah and its mission and the resale shop was his baby. In his honor, we are starting a memorial fund and all donations received will be earmarked for cancer research at Hadassah Medical Organization.  Jessica Castrejon is our new resale shop manager and I know we will all support her and the rest of the staff as we adjust to the changes.  If you ever thought of volunteering, now is the time!  Just email Jessica at nsresale@hadassah.org or call the store at 224-415-3994 and let her know what time works for you. You will receive earning fund credit and a discount on all purchases made that day.

Life goes on and so does our calendar.  Scroll down for details on all the great programming but upcoming events include Leah Reicin reviewing the book Like Dreamers on May 5.  On May 19 we will hold our #ChooseYourImpact Conference where there is a breakout session of interest for everyone.

For those of you who come to the chapter office, there is a doctor across the hall and no one knows what kind of doctor he is.  Well, on Wednesday, May 28 he will tell us about the unique services he offers regarding hormone replacement therapies and how to age well.  He said his specialty is dealing with menopause, so we knew right away we have lots of menopause experts who will be interested in hearing what he has to say!!!  Lastly, at our board meeting on May 5, the registration website for our Annual Walk for Life 3K, to be held on June 29, will be unveiled and go live.   Lots more details on that soon.

Play Examining Life of Henrietta Szold Comes to Chicago

On Holy Ground is a combination of two one-act plays by Stephanie Liss: Daughter of My People which tells the story of an older woman - the founder of Hadassah - deeply in love for the first time with a much younger man; and Jihad, which examines the Israeli-Palestinian conflict from the stories of two mothers, one living in an Israeli settlement and the other in a Palestinian area.

For Henrietta's story, Liss interviewed one of the nurses who took care of her in her last years. For Jihad, Liss went underground with Hamas and PLO as well as the Israeli Army.

The show runs May 5 - May 14 at the National Pastime Theater in the Preston Bradley Center, 941 W. Lawrence - Chicago. Tickets are $20. Click here to read more about the play or to purchase tickets.

Hadassah Heart Specialists Reveal Detrimental Effect of Thyroid Imbalance on Heart Failure Patients

A study by the Hadassah Medical Organization’s heart specialists has revealed that increased levels of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) are correlated with “worse clinical outcome” in patients suffering from heart failure.

“Thyroid imbalance,” they report, “confers significant risk in heart failure and warrants attention.”  While it has been known that thyroid dysfunction affects cardiac function and is a risk factor for heart failure, the scientists report, “data regarding the clinical significance of TSH levels alone as a predictor of outcome in patients with heart failure is sparse.”  Their study evaluated the significance of TSH on clinical outcome in a large cohort of patients with chronic heart failure.
Study findings reveal that both a high and a low TSH level are associated with an increased mortality rate.  In addition, TSH was also an independent predictor of death and cardiac-related hospitalization.  For those patients not receiving thyroid hormone treatment, “TSH was an even stronger predictor of mortality.”   At the same time, increasing TSH levels above normal were “independently associated with increased and cardiac-related hospitalizations.
