Letter from the President

Dear Members of Hadassah Chicago-North Shore Chapter,

Things are starting to quiet down around here in a pre-Pesach calm before the storm.  Lots of things in the works, however, so the office has been just as busy as always.  We are inundated with reservations for the Book & Author Luncheon.  It's going to be FABULOUS with a huge turnout and intriguing speakers on an important subject so if you haven't sent in your reservation yet, try to do so before you fall into a pot of soup.  If you wait until after Pesach, you'll be rushing, we'll be rushing. You get the drift.

On May 5 our very own Leah Reicin will be reviewing the book, "Like Dreamers: The Story of the Israeli Paratroopers Who Reunited Jerusalem and Divided a Nation."  This timely review will be held on Yom Ha’atzmaut; we all know how knowledgeable Leah is so this is a definite can't miss. Scroll down for details on this program.

Reservations are also coming in for our May 19 #ChooseYourImpact Conference.  I know some of you are concerned because there is more than one session you are interested in being held at the same time.  No worries, all our presenters will have handouts available in case you missed the session.  If this conference is as successful as I think it will be, we will hold it again next year and you can catch another presentation at that time.  So many wonderful choices...so little time.  I want to go to many of the presentations as well but can't because I'm leading sessions, so I am empathetic to your plight.  The co-chairs came up with the idea of the session "No problem too big, no problem too small, Michele will solve them all."  I dare you to attend this one and send in a problem with your registration and see if you can stump me!!!  I will also be disappearing into the kitchen next week but will make time to write you again one more time before the holiday.

Good Shabbos and good luck with the preparations. Spring is finally in the air....

Shabbat Shalom!

Michele

Michele Rubin
Chapter President

Play Examining Life of Henrietta Szold Comes to Chicago

On Holy Ground is a combination of two one-act plays by Stephanie Liss: Daughter of My People which tells the story of an older woman - the founder of Hadassah - deeply in love for the first time with a much younger man; and Jihad, which examines the Israeli-Palestinian conflict from the stories of two mothers, one living in an Israeli settlement and the other in a Palestinian area.

For Henrietta's story, Liss interviewed one of the nurses who took care of her in her last years. For Jihad, Liss went underground with Hamas and PLO as well as the Israeli Army.

The show runs May 5 - May 14 at the National Pastime Theater in the Preston Bradley Center, 941 W. Lawrence - Chicago. Tickets are $20. Click here to read more about the play or to purchase tickets.

"Israel: The Royal Tour" will air on WTTW in April

A one-hour documentary from Peter Greenberg of CBS focusing on Israel will air on WTTW on April 17, featuring Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (right, pictured with Greenberg).

Take a look at one review of "Israel: The Royal Tour" below.

Interested in a tour of Israel led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu? You’re in luck.  In the documentary "Israel: The Royal Tour," Netanyahu gives journalist Peter Greenberg a tour of the Holy Land, from the snow-topped peaks of the north to the deserts of the south. Together they float in the Dead Sea, take a boat through the Red Sea, and raft down the Jordan river. They visit the ancient site of Masada before traveling to Haifa to see the high-tech world of the Technion.

“It was a great mix from the Mediterranean Sea to the (Negev) desert. We had a lot of fun. He said that he hadn’t been on a bicycle for years because of security,” Greenberg told the Jewish Star. “So we put the bikes on the road and jumped on and were racing and the security guards ran after us.”

Netanyahu uses the tour to discuss the threat of terrorism facing the state of Israel, stressing that Israel must remain strong militarily and economically in order to protect its civilians.

PROJECT NEWS

Insight into Pediatric Radiotherapy Treatment at Hadassah Provided to ALYN Colleagues

To gain a greater understanding of the radiation therapy and support that pediatric cancer patients receive at the Hadassah Medical Organization, psychologists, social workers, and rehabilitation nurses from ALYN Woldenberg Family Hospital, Israel's only pediatric and adolescent rehabilitation facility, visited Hadassah for an in-depth briefing and tour.

ALYN's professional staff observed Hadassah's Radiotherapy Unit, including its simulation and radiation rooms and state-of-the art radiotherapy equipment. They met with the Unit's health care team and heard presentations from Dr. Marc Wygoda, the Unit's Director, who provided them with a general overview of the radiotherapy process, and Sarit Kaduri, Head Nurse of the Radiology Unit, who explained the type of guidance and support Hadassah gives its pediatric patients and their families.

ALYN, located in Jerusalem, cares for children with a wide range of congenital and acquired conditions, including cerebral palsy, neuromuscular diseases, spinal cord injuries, brain injuries, and burns. Many of the children are Hadassah patients.

Project News is submitted by Randy Heidenfelder, Project Information Chair and Lisa Ginsburgh.
