Letter from the President

Dear Members of Hadassah Chicago-North Shore Chapter,

WOW!!! I'm kvelling!  The Book and Author Luncheon was the most fabulous event.  Many, many thanks to Diane Rosenfeld and Barbara Saxton Turek on the outstanding job they did chairing this event.  It was really amazing.

You know we don't rest around here, by Tuesday I was already busy talking to chairmen for other upcoming events.  Things just keep getting better and better.  Next up is the Grand Opening for the Resale Shop on Sunday, May 4 from noon - 4 p.m.  Raffles and great deals abound so check it out!

Just one day later is Yom Haatmazut, Israel Independence Day, and we will be commemorating it by hearing Leah Reicin review the book Like Dreamers: The Story of the Israeli Paratroopers  Who Reunited Jerusalem and Divided a Nation.  It will be held in the office at 1 p.m. on Monday, May 5.

People got so caught up with this week's luncheon they forgot that the #ChooseYourImpact conference is right around the corner.  There are lots of choices for everyone so scroll down to download a reservation form.  Remember, there is one session where you bring me your problems to solve.  Can you give me one I can't solve???  I dare you!

The doctor in the office across the hall from us (that no one knows what he does) is coming on May 26 to fill you in.  He is a LifeForce doctor and works with hormones to make you feel as if you have had a drink from the fountain of youth.  I'll take a sip or two, please!

If this isn't enough, save the dates for an Associate Program on Sunday, June 8 and the Walk for Life 3K on June 29. Scroll down for all the details.

Information will be coming out very soon regarding the Keeper of the Gate, Cypress/Pomegranate and Big Gift thank you events.  Lots of chairmen are working hard to give you the thank you that you deserve for your generosity.

Jerusalem Post Article on Hadassah Hospital Lifts the Spirit of National President

National Hadassah President Marcie Natan only had good things to say about an article that ran recently in the Jerusalem Post penned by columnist Gil Troy. The blog is "a reminder of how important it is to preserve our Zionist dreams and amazing hospital those dreams have built," Natan wrote in response.

Take a look at the blog post below:

Leadership Time for Bibi: Start Reimbursing Hadassah Fairly
By Gil Troy, Jerusalem Post 29/04/2014

Having worsened the Hadassah hospital crisis by extending unfairly low reimbursements for consistently superior medical care, Israel’s government now risks bungling the response. Hippocrates was right. Like any physician’s basic ethical obligation, a leader must first do no harm. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his coalition colleagues will stain their records permanently if they destroy these national treasures.

Play Examining Life of Henrietta Szold Comes to Chicago

On Holy Ground is a combination of two one-act plays by Stephanie Liss: Daughter of My People which tells the story of an older woman - the founder of Hadassah - deeply in love for the first time with a much younger man; and Jihad, which examines the Israeli-Palestinian conflict from the stories of two mothers, one living in an Israeli settlement and the other in a Palestinian area.

For Henrietta's story, Liss interviewed one of the nurses who took care of her in her last years. For Jihad, Liss went underground with Hamas and PLO as well as the Israeli Army.

The show runs May 5 - May 14 at the National Pastime Theater in the Preston Bradley Center, 941 W. Lawrence - Chicago. Tickets are $20. Click here to read more about the play or to purchase tickets.

Hadassah Student Designs Artificial Flipper to Help Injured Sea Turtle

Shlomi Gez, an industrial design student at  Hadassah Academic College in Jerusalem, created a custom-designed flipper made of polypropylene, a water-resistant durable but flexible plastic flipper for an injured sea turtle.

When Hofesh ("freedom" in Hebrew)  an 88-pound green sea turtle, washed up on Israel’s Mediterranean shore, he had two nearly severed limbs.  His rescuers had to amputate both limbs, which left him unable to swim or even keep his head above water.

Shlomi saw Hofesh’s plight on the website for the Israel Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center website and he began to create an artificial flipper.   The final version was inspired by a model of the Lockheed Martin plane, the Raptor F22.  “I’m using two small flippers placed at the same angle as the two rear winglets on the aircraft,” he explained.  Gez, a 30-year old animal lover, made the flippers as his final project for his studies at the Industrial Design Department.

With the new flipper, Hofesh can now swim normally, said Yaniv Levy, director of the center, which has rescued over 500 sea turtles, both green turtles, a highly endangered species and loggerheads.  The Center, founded 15 years ago, has successfully returned about 70% of them to the sea.  It is located in Michmoret, a coastal community north of Netanya.

Hofesh cannot be set free because if his flippers ever came loose, he would drown.  But he now has a girlfriend.  Green turtles are globally endangered, so Hofesh has been selected for a breeding program.  Of course, he may be funny-looking to a regular girl sea turtle with his odd set of plastic fins on his back.  But Tsurit lost her sight as a result of a boat injury, so she does not notice.  They are happily sharing a tank at the Center.  Green sea turtles have the same average life span of humans, but reach sexual maturity only at age 30.  The couple are still in their twenties, so likely have a few years of fooling around before they get serious.

Between the first and second world wars, some 30,000 of the sea turtles were killed by hunters off the northern Mediterranean coast.  Today, there are no more than two dozen left in the area.  The Center runs a breeding program which currently includes 26 green sea turtles.  Its hospital treats the green turtles and the more common, but also endangered loggerhead species, and now has 15 patients under care.  Most are injured by boats and fishing nets.

The Industrial Design Department of Hadassah Academic College focuses on the development of aesthetic sensitivity to cultural, environmental and practical considerations of the inclusive approach to design. This approach aims to adjust environments, products and services for a variety of users, regardless of age, disability or circumstances --- or species.
