Letter from the President

Dear Members of Hadassah Chicago-North Shore Chapter,

How is everyone doing?  I hope everyone is enjoying a spring just as cold as our winter. I'm sitting here watching the snow fall and dreaming of summer days that have to be coming soon.  They are coming soon, aren't they?

All is warm and cozy in our chapter office!  We are getting ready for our #ChooseYourImpact conference on Monday.  The response is great and the chairmen are working extra hard to make sure this is a program to remember for a long time.  If you've ever wanted to find out what the big deal was with all those electronic devices your grandkids use, this is the program for you.  If you've ever wanted to hear Bonnie Lipton tell all her interesting stories from her time as National President, this is the program for you.  If you've ever considered putting your toe into a leadership position but want to find out more about working with committees or public speaking, this is the event for you.  With a registration fee of only $10, you can't lose!  You can call us Monday morning and let us know you want to attend. I'll see you there!

Scroll down for information on our LifeForce Program on May 28, Associates program on June 8,  Walk for Life 3K on June 29 (btw, the online registration is open for this) and National Convention July 21-23.  Summer Camp info is below as well!  This will be an extremely interesting Summer Camp and I know there will be a great response.

Lastly, as we head into graduation season, I want to wish a heartfelt Mazel Tov to everyone who has a child or grandchild graduating from anything or everything.  One member told me she had four grandchildren graduating from various education levels this month.  Now that's a lot of mazel!

Here in the office, Ronna Ash, executive director, has a daughter graduating high school in a couple of weeks and tomorrow my son graduates from college.  It is Jewish tradition to give a bit of tzedakah when something good happens to you so if you have a graduate or know of a graduate, consider buying a tree, purchasing a tree on our Tree of Life, joining our Cypress Society or just making a general donation.  We will let your graduate know they have been honored.  As I head down to Champaign this afternoon, should I bring my snow boots?

Getting Back to Normal with Physical Therapy

The department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, part of the Geriatric Rehabilitation Complex, helps patients whose function is limited to achieve independence and to return to the community in the best available condition with the maximal quality of life.

The department offers rehabilitation treatment for patients suffering from diverse neurological conditions such as stroke, traumatic brain injury, brain tumors, spinal cord injury, and neuromuscular disorders, diverse orthopedic disorders, reconstructive surgery cases, rheumatologic conditions, amputations, burns and low back pain and general pain syndromes.  All patients are treated by comprehensive, interdisciplinary in-patient rehabilitation program conducted under the direction of a physiatrist.

Each patient received approximately 3 hours of supervised therapy daily from both physical and occupational therapists. The rehabilitation treatment includes physiotherapy for motor and gait recovery. We use also Robotic device (LOKOMAT) with partial body weight support to improve locomotors function of our patients. In occupational therapy the main emphasis is on ADL training and cognitive rehabilitation including computerized programs. Special speech therapy for brain injury patients is employed in our speech therapy unit.
During all rehabilitation periods, special attention is given to the psychological and social issues. Each patient is evaluated and treated by psychologist if needed.  A social worker is involved in each patient regarding the connection with the patients' families, community and the other authorities.

Project News is submitted by Randy Heidenfelder, Project Information Chair and Lisa Ginsburgh.
