Letter from the President

Dear Members of Hadassah Chicago-North Shore Chapter,

I hope everyone is having a wonderful day and is busy planning exciting ways to tell the men in your life what wonderful fathers they are.

Around here, we are beginning our two week countdown for our Walk for Life 3K.  It will be held at the Botanic Garden in Glencoe.  Registration starts at 8 AM and the Walk kicks off at 9 AM.  Click this link or call the office today to register.  Registrations are pouring in now and we will have a great crowd!  Don’t forget to ask you family and friends to walk with you or make a donation in your honor.   I’ll see you there.

Have you enrolled in Summer Camp yet???  See all the details below and don’t miss this one!  Everyone loves camp. Time is almost running out on registering for Convention July 21-23 in Las Vegas.  We have a lot of people already signed up but I know a lot of you are still on the fence.  Please let me know if I can answer any questions for you.  I’d love to see you all there!

Lastly, invitations have been mailed for our Cypress Society/Pomegranate Circle Annual Donor Thank You Event. This great event will be held on July 8 at the Maya Romanoff wall covering studio and is a thank you to those that have enrolled in our Annual Giving programs.  Cypress Society Members pay $250 annually and you can earmark it towards your favorite Hadassah project.  Pay it semi-annually or in quarterly installments if you don’t want to pay it all at once.  Pomegranate Circle Members pay $600 annually and you can choose to pay annually, semi-annually, quarterly or even monthly.  That’s just $50 a month.  Some people spend more than that each month at Starbuck’s so it shouldn’t be a problem spending this much to make the world a better place, should it?  Members of both annual giving plans get pins.  We make it so easy for you, there’s no reason not to be a member! Just contact the office to join.

Shabbat Shalom,

Michele

Michele Rubin
Chapter President

PROJECT NEWS

Hadassah Congratulates Israeli President-Elect Reuven Rivlin

Hadassah congratulates Israeli President-elect Reuven Rivlin on his election as the 10th President of Israel. Rivlin, a member of the Likud party, has been a Member of the Knesset (MK) since 1988 and served twice as Speaker of the Knesset. He also served as the Minister of Communications from 2001-2003. Rivlin, a lawyer by training, was also director and chairman of the Beitar Jerusalem Sports Association and chairman of the Institute for Occupational Safety and Hygiene.

President-elect Rivlin is a longtime supporter of Hadassah Hospital and recently visited with patients at Hadassah Ein Kerem. We look forward to the opportunity to continue working with him throughout his presidency.

Prior to the election, Rivlin wrote an article for the Israel Democracy Institute discussing his vision for the presidency:

We do not know what trials the coming years will bring. The president, with his or her nonpartisanship, must be someone who can rise above conflict, even in times of crisis, and act to prevent crises and rifts. In a society torn by such deep disagreements there must be at least one institution and one person who is trusted and accepted by all parties to the dispute. The president cannot resolve the arguments, but he must do everything in his power to enable all of us to live with these divisions and must groom the public not only to agree but also to agree to disagree. Click here to read the full article.

Israeli presidential elections take place every seven years. Members of the Knesset cast their votes by secret ballot and the winner must receive a majority of votes (61 out of 120 MKs). If a majority is not reached after the first round of voting, a runoff is held between the top two candidates. Rivlin received the most votes (44) in the first round voting, and won the runoff 63 to 53 against MK Meir Sheetrit, a member of the centrist Hatnuah party established by Tzipi Livni. Rivlin will be sworn in on July 24, replacing Shimon Peres who has been the Israeli President since July 2007.
