Letter from the President

Dear Members of Hadassah Chicago-North Shore Chapter,

I hope everyone had a nice Shavuot and had your fill of blintzes and cheesecake for a while.   Now that summer has firmly set in, it is time to register for our Walk for Life 3K to be held on Sunday, June 29 at Chicago Botanic Garden in Glencoe.  Create a team for your book group, mahj group, family or friends!  Stay in the Garden all day and enjoy all it has to offer.  Parking is FREE with your registration, a $20 value. All the money raised will go to support Hadassah Medical Organization (HMO) which, as you know, saves thousands of lives each year in Jerusalem, our homeland.  HMO is also at the forefront in breakthrough research involving stem-cells, cardiac health and diabetes that will not only save lives in Israel and around the world but also saves lives here in the United States.  Please consider joining us for a lovely walk.  Can't walk, that's OK, please consider joining us as a volunteer or just make a donation.  Click this link to register, volunteer or give.  www.hadassah.org/chicago-northshore

Invitations are in the mail for our Cypress Society and Pomegranate Circle Annual Giving Program thank you event to be held on July 8.  Consider these annual giving programs to show your dedicated support of Hadassah.  Joining the Cypress Society means making a commitment of an annual gift of $250 per year.  For just pennies more than $20/month, you can do your part to support the magnificent work of Hadassah.  Joining the Pomegranate Circle is an annual commitment of just $600/year which is only $50/month.  Now, that's doable, isn't it?  You get a wonderful no charge thank you event each year as well.  This year's will be at the Romanoff Studio where you will see how beautiful hand painted wall coverings are created and you will be amazed, I promise!  Invites are only being sent to current members of these programs so if you have ever considered joining one of these wonderful programs call the office now so you can be included in this event.

Lastly, Mazel Tov to National President, Marcie Natan, for being named one of Jerusalem Posts Most Influential Jews of 2014.

 Shabbat Shalom,

Michele Rubin
Chapter President

Prof. Alex Margulis: Pediatric Surgeon at Hadassah and Israel Navy Seal

As his “day job,” Prof. Alex Margulis heads the Hadassah Medical Center’s Pediatric Plastic Surgery and Craniofacial Unit, where children born with birth defects or injured in terrorist attacks are given a new lease on life. At the same time, Prof. Margulis, at age 47, is still active in the Shayetet 13 Reserves, Israel’s Navy Seals Special Forces.

Specializing in sea-to-land incursions, counter-terrorism, sabotage, maritime intelligence gathering, and maritime hostage rescue, Shayetet 13 Seals enter enemy lands to carry out secret operations, stop intruding ships, and protect Israel’s coast.

About his day job, Prof. Margulis says: "I love the beauty of this profession which combines medicine and art. It's tangible and, at the end of the surgery, you can see the results."

Prof. Margulis completed his residency at Hadassah and then did a two-year fellowship at Chicago Children's Hospital, where he worked with Dr. Bruce Bauer, a world-famous plastic surgeon. As for his participation in Shayetet 13, he notes: "I wanted to be in the most challenging unit possible in the Israel Defense Forces. I believed I could cope with it and wanted to give my maximum. I've always wanted to do my most for Israel; I guess it’s a family ethic.”

Prof. Margulis’ grandfather, Nahum, was the only Margulis to survive the Holocaust.

Prof. Margulis’ father, Miron, was a Refusenik who fought, along with Natan Sharansky, for the right to make Aliyah to Israel. The family finally received permission to emigrate in 1977 when Alex was 10 years old.

Married to Irit, a social worker, Prof. Margulis has three children. "I'm Israeli in my bones and in my soul,” says Prof. Margulis. “My dream is still securing freedom for us by overcoming the internal problems and striving for peace.
