Israel once again finds itself in a time of crisis, forced to take military action to defend its citizens from indiscriminate rocket and mortar fire. American support and strategic partnerships are instrumental to securing Israel’s safety.
Since 2005, over 13,000 rockets have been fired from Gaza into Israel and over 2,500 missiles have been launched in recent weeks. The Iron Dome Missile Defense System has intercepted 90 percent of rockets headed for populated areas, saving countless lives. With over two-thirds of Israeli citizens in a constant state of alert, Israel initiated Operation Protective Edge in self-defense to stop the indiscriminate rocket and mortar fire from Gaza. As President Obama himself has said, no country on earth would tolerate missiles raining down on its citizens from outside its borders.
Israel has agreed to several cease-fire proposals, all of which were violated or outright rejected by the Palestinians. Israel seeks peace and has opened her arms to any true partners in that endeavor, but she cannot be expected to negotiate with those who seek her destruction.
Israel – a steadfast friend and ally of the United States – needs American support during this time of crisis. Hadassah appreciates the Administration's endorsement of additional funding for the Iron Dome Missile Defense System and encourages President Obama's swift signature on this appropriation.

The United States must lead the international community in advocating for the demilitarization of Gaza—including the immediate removal of all Hamas rockets and terrorist tunnels—and Israel’s right to sovereignty, security, and self-defense.
