Hadassah

Hadassah Brooklyn

Hadassah Brooklyn began in 1921. At its strongest period in time, we boasted more than 20,000 members. We provide programs of interest all over the borough of Brooklyn, at all times of the day and evening, every day of the week, every month of the year. We are comprised of all denominations of Jewish observance. Region events observe the laws of kashrut and respect Shabbat.

From our President

Barbara Katz

Dear Hadassah Sisters, Associates and Friends,

We recently observed Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Birthday.  As this holiday does every year, it reminded me that Jewish leaders and advocates were marching at Dr. King’s side through the difficult days of the civil rights struggle.

Rabbi Saul J. Berman, a leading Orthodox thinker, who is Hadassah Brooklyn’s administrative assistant Esther Lefkowitz (Berman)’s father, was active in both the Civil Rights and Soviet Jewry movements.  In March 1965 he went to Selma, Alabama, with members of his congregation, to do voter registration work on behalf of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and to participate in the March from Selma to Montgomery. He was arrested twice during this time.

As many of you were, I was inspired by these leaders to advocate for equal rights, for freedom for Soviet Jewry and for the defense of Israel.  I discovered that Hadassah was an organization of powerful women who put their ideals to work in practical ways.

In 2018, Hadassah women are still making our voices heard, supporting a woman’s right to choose, fighting against domestic abuse and human trafficking, urging equity in women’s medical research, and access to preventive healthcare and affordable child care.

This year, join Hadassah Brooklyn in lobbying our federal representatives to support Hadassah’s priorities in the United States and Israel, either in Brooklyn or in Washington at Hadassah’s Women’s Health and Advocacy Conference.   I urge you to join me in attending the conference which will take place from May 15-17, 2018.  There will be an important panel at the National Press Club, an update from the Israeli Ambassador, lobbying training sessions and meetings with our legislators on the Hill. A joyful HMO Gala is planned with amazing entertainment. We will begin “Celebration 2018” for Israel’s 70th birthday.   You can register for the conference on line at Hadassah.org or call the Brooklyn office for more information.

Advocacy is in our DNA, so let’s show it off. We have the power to make changes in our world. Let’s use it!

There are still volunteer opportunities, both large and small, on the Brooklyn Executive Board.  Please email me at bkatz@hadassh.org if you are interested in joining the Brooklyn Women Who Do.

I look forward to seeing you at our region and chapter events!

B'Shalom,
Barbara Katz

2018 Passion to Action Header

Celebration 2018

Our year-long celebration starts now! 2018 is a banner year at Hadassah as we mark four major milestones during a year-long celebration. Throughout the year, there will be chances to turn your passion into action with Hadassah — in both the United States and Israel. During Israel's 70th anniversary, we'll celebrate the impact Hadassah has had on Israel and throughout the world during the first hundred years of the Hadassah Medical Organization and the Hadassah School of Nursing, and look at the ways Hadassah innovation is shaping the future.
