Calendar of Events

Hadassah Chicago-North Shore has exciting events throughout the year.  You can find upcoming events below.

From our President

Luisa

The Hebrew word ‘Or’ as a noun means “light” and as a verb, it means to “give light” or “shine.”  There is no better word to describe the women of Hadassah Chicago-North Shore (CNS) and their contributions to our community and Israel.

Our members choose Hadassah because they want to make a difference. They shine by supporting the life-saving medical research, technology and care provided at Hadassah’s hospitals and recognized around the world. New light is cast on immigrant and indigent youth in Israel by our members’ work to bring education, housing and support to those in need. And children here at home are able to engage in the light of their spirits through Camp Young Judaea Midwest and their many programs and opportunities for youth and young adults.

Hadassah women empower others to become leaders and to take action which leads to better lives and healing for those in need. Throughout each year, our leaders come together in programs and training to hone their skills and strengthen their groups and CNS. We are women who Do.

Hadassah is a home for all of us; it’s where we can grow as leaders and become agents of repairing the world. Because of you, we will continue spreading the light of hope and healing, Or.

Winter Film - A Borrowed Identity

Winter Film - A Borrowed Identity

January 19, 2017

Hadassah Chicago-North Shore

This year's Winter Film Series features A Borrowed Identity, When Comedy Went to School, and Katyn. All films will be screened at 12pm on a Thursday in the Crain-Maling Media Center at Hadassah Chicago-North Shore. Our first film, A Borrowed Identity, explores the complex interrelated identities of Jewish and Palestinian Israelis—two peoples divided by a shared culture, to paraphrase Oscar Wilde—and is a sharply mounted drama about a young Arab who finds reasons to “pass” as Jewish. The film represents a merging of cultures in its origins too. It was directed by Eran Riklis, a leading Israeli filmmaker (“The Human Resources Manager,” “The Syrian Bride”), and scripted by acclaimed Arab-Israeli writer Seyad Kashua (“Dancing Arabs,” “Let It Be Morning”), based on his autobiographical fictions.

This year's Winter Film Series features A Borrowed Identity, When Comedy Went to School, and Katyn. All films will be screened at 12pm on a Thursday in the Crain-Maling Media Center at Hadassah Chicago-North Shore. Our second film, When Comedy Went to School, shows us the birth of modern stand-up comedy, which began in the 1930s in the Catskills, setting the stage "for the most important, fascinating era in American humor." Among the name-checked Catskills alums include a mix of comedians old school and new, including David Brenner, Mel Brooks, Lenny Bruce, Red Buttons, Jack Carter, Sid Caesar, Norm Crosby, Billy Crystal, Myron Cohen, Rodney Dangerfield, Totie Fields, Dick Gregory, Buddy Hackett, Danny Kaye, Allan King, Bill Maher, Jackie Mason, Joan Rivers, Mort Sahl, Jerry Seinfeld, and Dick Shawn. For the entertainers, the Catskills was a comedy boot camp.

Winter Film - Katyn

Winter Film - Katyn

March 16, 2017

Hadassah Chicago-North Shore

This year's Winter Film Series features A Borrowed Identity, When Comedy Went to School, and Katyn. All films will be screened at 12pm on a Thursday in the Crain-Maling Media Center at Hadassah Chicago-North Shore. Our last film, Katyn tells the story of how in 1940, some 15,000 officers of the Polish army were rounded up, transported in sealed buses to a forest named Katyn, shot in the back of their heads by the Russian KGB and buried in mass graves. That is the simple truth. When the nation was occupied by both the Nazis and Soviets, their deaths were masked in silence. One of the officers murdered that day was Jakub Wajda, whose son Andrzej would become a leading Polish film director, and one of the chroniclers of the Solidarity movement. Andrzej has evoked what happened that day and how it infected Polish society for 50 years.
