From our President
Message from Denver Chapter Co-Presidents:
When [the month of] Adar arrives, we increase our joy! Mishenichnas Adar marbin b'simcha. On Purim, we read the story of a heroic woman who risked her own life to save her people from extinction. Esther’s story demonstrates the important role of women in our communities and encourages them to act even in the face of danger.
Hadassah also began with one woman –Henrietta Szold– a woman whose heart was moved by the beauty of the land of Palestine and saddened by the suffering of its inhabitants due to unsanitary conditions and widespread disease. When Henrietta returned to America, she inspired her small group of Jewish women whose love of study and Judaism decided to take on the task of repairing a corner of the world. Since they first met on Purim in 1912, they took the name of Hadassah, Esther’s Hebrew name, and continued her legacy of bravery and action. Without professional expertise or personal income, these volunteers who couldn’t vote and didn’t work outside the home created the organization known as Hadassah, the largest women’s and Zionist organization in the world.
Over the past century Hadassah has grown into an organization with over 300,000 members and supporters and has kept the eternal light of one woman’s vision burning brightly. We can continue to increase our joy by participating in one of the local Hadassah Shabbat services and by attending our chapter’s Women of the West event on March 27. We can also celebrate with donations to the 360° Campaign to rebuild the Hadassah Round Building on the Ein Kerem Campus. Please contact Judith Levitsky, our chapter and Desert Mountain Region Philanthropy Chair, if you have questions or would like to make a donation.
