Gail Black President

Dear Hadassah Members,

Hadassah Northern New Jersey encompasses 23 chapters from Bergen, Essex Morris, Passaic and Union Counties including Staten Island, New York as well! We have over 11,000 members in our region and we endeavor to raise money for our projects while informing our membership through programs related to advocacy, Zionism and education.

In 2017 Hadassah will focus on our Research in Service to Humanity campaign by highlighting four diseases: heart disease, multiple sclerosis, melanoma, and breast cancer. Hadassah has been internationally recognized for decades of leadership in stem cell research to fight disease. Our scientists have halted the deterioration of the retina in laboratory models by using patients’ own stem cells. Stem cell therapy has also inhibited the progression of ALS in human clinical trials. Treatments or cures for diseases like age-related macular degeneration, ALS, MS, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and diabetes could be a reality in the foreseeable future. Anti-Semitism remains one of Hadassah’s top priorities. We have learning materials on how to combat BDS, and an online speaker series called Defining Zionism in the 21st Century, which is designed to provide a safe space for everyone to explore and discuss Zionism and its multi-faceted perspectives.

One primary domestic advocacy cause concerns Gender Equity in Medical Research. We have taken a stand for greater research and education in women’s health issues and awareness of women’s preventive health care services. Advocate today and have the power to transform lives. Your life may depend on it.

We also fight against Human Trafficking. Every day, men, women and children are forced into labor or sexual exploitation, with 20.9 million victims of human trafficking globally. Join Hadassah in raising awareness and urge policy makers at the local, state, and federals levels to take action.

The Hadassah-supported Youth Aliyah sets at-risk children in Israel on the path to a successful future. Since 1934, over 300,000 young people from 80 lands have graduated from Youth Aliyah villages.

The Zionist Youth Movement, Young Judaea builds a connection to Jewish life and a love of Israel for thousands of American youth and young adults through its summer camps, Israel programs, and volunteer experiences. Hadassah and Young Judaea continue their strong partnership through their shared mission of connecting Americans to Israel, religious pluralism, leadership development, learning, and advocacy. So, come join us as we continue Henrietta Szold’s dream for tikkun olam, repairing the world. Hadassah has been recognized as a bridge to peace, and was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2005.

We are a membership organization, and we need you. Chapters and the region hold many interesting programs and events throughout the year to educate and to raise funds for our two hospitals in Jerusalem, our Youth Aliyah villages and to provide scholarships for Young Judaea. Find out more and be part of the 330,000 national members, associates and friends of Hadassah, the Women’s Zionist Organization of America.
