Hadassah and Jerusalem have Always Been Synonymous
We applaud the US Administration for its historic recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of the state of Israel for the first time in seven decades. Hadassah has always viewed Jerusalem as the capital of the state of Israel, and reaffirms its unwavering support for a united Jerusalem.

From our President
Dear Hadassah Friends,
So now, at last December has arrived. Shopping for and giving Hanukkah gifts, frying latkes and sufganiyot, making those end-of- year donations… there’s only so much we can accomplish. Our new Region Board will be installed on December 19, and I would like to say thank you to Gerry Stein, Recording Secretary; Adele Shafman, Area VP; and Lila Barsky, Area VP; as they step down after many years of service. I would also like to welcome first time board members being installed, Wendy Salkin, Zionism Coordinator and Bobbi Lipschutz, Membership Coordinator.
This year, we light the first Hanukkah candle on December 12, after sundown. We all learned in Hebrew School about the miracle of Hanukkah and the oil which was only enough for one night, but lasted eight nights until more oil was found. This is a fitting metaphor for Hadassah. We do more with less. We are called upon to perform miracles daily.
The teachers and staff of our Youth Aliyah Villages produce miraculous transformations on the young people in their care. They create scholars who are healthy in mind and body and contribute to strengthening the State of Israel. Young Judaea camps develop committed Zionists out of our American kids in just four short weeks during the summer.
Right here, in Northern NJ, we held our Health Event with 100 people in attendance, proving once again that Hadassah women make miracles happen. And Hadassah has been making miracles happen for almost 106 years. Your donations may seem small to you, but Hadassah manages to magnify your dollars by careful use. I urge you to make a donation to Hadassah before the end of the tax year to enable the miracles to continue.
As I polish my hanukkiyah, I’m thinking about my role as president of Hadassah Northern NJ. I see myself as the shamash. That’s the candle in the hanukkiyah, placed higher than the rest, which is used lend its flame to light the other candles. I may stand taller than the other candles, but by the time I’ve done my “kindling” duties, I’m more or less even with my fellow Hanukkah lichter (Hanukkah lights). My job is to ignite their passion and possibilities, night after night, until we’re all burning brightly. I am proud to use my energy to spark ideas in others and to shine with my friends for as long as we can. But, I want to remind you that you too, can be the shamash. Take on a job with Hadassah and ignite the passion of eight other women to help you. We need an Associates Chair and a Celebrate 2018 Chair. Please contact me if you are interested and let us keep the hanukkiyah burning for Hadassah, the Power of women who DO
