Installation 2016

Sunday, January 8, 2017

Dear friends and members of Hadassah Rhode Island,

As I sit here cozy in my warm house, I am disappointed that we were not able to hold our Hadassah meeting today .  We had planned this meeting with our speaker, Hershey Rosen, whom many of you know -  and it’s too bad that the snowfall did us in!  It is always best to be cautious as we ask our members to be on the roads, right??

Our next big event is in May  - Cause for Applause, to honor the memory of Dr. Meredith Drench.  This year’s play at the Ocean State Theater on May 7 is “Victor, Victoria”.  And our annual Books on the Beach will be in August, to be held again at Oceancliff in Newport.  Please watch for more information on both of these exciting events on our Hadassah calendar!

So I did want to fill you in on some of the Hadassah Rhode Island  “ goings-on”.  From December 15 to 24, about 50 of us gift wrapped at Warwick Mall, continuing a project begun about 40 years ago by Pawtucket Hadassah.  What a wonderful and fun this event is, a great bonding among our members and friends and a great way to spread the word of Hadassah, as well as to make new friendships and rekindle some from the previous year!  Our huge thanks to Judy Silverman who coordinates this entire project!!!

Because of YOU in 2016 we...

  • Launched the Research in Service to Humanity Campaign to harness the power of scientific imagination and relieve suffering around the world. Research breakthroughs at the Hadassah Medical Organization — such as a revolutionary stem cell therapy to treat ALS patients — riveted the worldwide medical community. Results show that the therapy inhibited ALS disease progression in 87% of clinical trial patients.
  • Completed funding for the new underground surgical suite in the Sarah Wetsman Davidson Hospital Tower. Today, Hadassah's world-renowned surgical teams can provide victims of terror and trauma with the best care possible, safe from harm.
  • Founded and convened the Coalition for Women's Health Equity — now 21 organizations strong and growing — to advocate for women's health equity in prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and cure. Next up: the Coalition's Women's Health Summit in Washington, DC, in May 2017.
  • Expanded Defining Zionism in the 21st Century, adding live events into the lineup of Hadassah's provocative monthly speaker series, created to foster conversations around the country and deepen connections to Zionism, with 66,000 viewers online, and over 500 at live events.
  • Provided 270 Young Judaea scholarships to summer camps and Israel experiences to help ensure Jewish continuity for future generations.
  • Made possible a range of Youth Aliyah programs — from school villages to travel, from marathons to music, that give children at risk and from a variety of backgrounds a pathway to success, and a sense of sanctuary.
  • Reached more than 7 million Facebook users building support for Israel & Zionism, women's health & wellness, and research and treatment at HMO in Israel.

The results are real and, in many cases, astounding. We could not have done any of this without you. We look forward to sharing more of these successes with you throughout 2017.
