The first Hadassah activity in Charlotte began in 1925 when Miss Dorothy Hirsch organized a teen-aged group known as the “Hadassah Buds”. This group functioned for two years as an outlet for young women interested in contributing to the Palestine Infant Welfare Fund. In 1934, the Buds, now adults, blossomed into a fully chartered chapter. According to Minnie Sutker, a charter member, “On October 3, 1934, fifteen women met in a private dining room at a cafeteria on West Trade Street, borrowed money from each other to pay their dues, signed the Charter, and thus the Charlotte Chapter of Hadassah, with Rhea White as President, was officially organized. It was a momentous occasion, and if you were there, you will always remember that day.” The Charlotte Chapter has functioned fully and proudly since that time and how we have grown! Charlotte now boasts 1,094 members, including over 959 life members. Over 70 men lend their support as Hadassah Associates. Education programs command a significant portion of the calendar. The chapter offers study groups throughout the year, called Lunch & Learn along with other meetings designed to educate and inform our members on issues and topics which affect them as American Jewish women. Another favorite and well attended program is Health Night, an informative, educational night with guest physicians that is open to the entire community. From our President
As we welcome in the New Year, 2017, we hope to “make new friends, but keep the old ones, one is silver and the other is gold.” I learned these lyrics in Girl Scouts, when I was a young girl growing up in Texas. They are ONE of the themes for 2017 Charlotte Chapter of Hadassah. We hope to have a new member luncheon in January, to welcome our newest members. On January 5 we will install our new board, and I am very excited about our team for the coming year. We are a combination of women who bring passion, dedication, and friendship to Hadassah, and I feel lucky to work with them on Hadassah initiatives.
Our most exciting news for January 2017 is the progress we have made with our Directory. We are excited to share with you that we have been working to update the processes for collecting and publishing the information in the Charlotte Jewish Community Directory by Hadassah. We are REBUILDING THE DATABASE. We will be releasing a link in the coming weeks for your convenience. In the new year, you will be able to add your personal listings electronically, as well as pay online for your Jewels, and Honors. Once you submit your information, you will receive a FREE directory. The 2017 Directory will be printed and released in the Fall of 2017. If you wish to be recognized as a Patron for $18, we will mail your directory to you. We are working to make the 2017 directory a more accurate and valuable resource for our community. If you would like to purchase an ad for your business, you will be able to do this online as well. These are only a few of the improvements we are making to our directory. After all, we have been providing this directory for our community for the past 70 years, and it is our pleasure to continue the tradition.
Wishing you and your families a healthy year, filled with happiness, friendships, and much success. Hadassah has so much to look forward to in 2017, we hope that you will join us.
