The first Hadassah activity in Charlotte began in 1925 when Miss Dorothy Hirsch organized a teen-aged group known as the “Hadassah Buds”. This group functioned for two years as an outlet for young women interested in contributing to the Palestine Infant Welfare Fund. In 1934, the Buds, now adults, blossomed into a fully chartered chapter. According to Minnie Sutker, a charter member, “On October 3, 1934, fifteen women met in a private dining room at a cafeteria on West Trade Street, borrowed money from each other to pay their dues, signed the Charter, and thus the Charlotte Chapter of Hadassah, with Rhea White as President, was officially organized. It was a momentous occasion, and if you were there, you will always remember that day.” The Charlotte Chapter has functioned fully and proudly since that time and how we have grown! Charlotte now boasts over 1000 members, including over 900 life members. Over 70 men lend their support as Hadassah Associates. Education programs command a significant portion of the calendar. The chapter offers study groups throughout the year, called Lunch & Learn along with other meetings designed to educate and inform our members on issues and topics which affect them as American Jewish women. Another favorite and well attended program is “Ask the Doctors,” an informative, educational Health Night with guest physicians that is open to the entire community.

From our President

Dana Kapustin

Shana Tova u’metukah, a very sweet and happy new year to all. As we approach the High Holidays, we have so much to look forward to in the remaining months of 2016. For a quick look back at the last few months, late August was filled with laughter, friendship and positive energy as our board and members participated in Casa Hadassah.  Delicious margaritas were served while discussing the upcoming events for this year. In September, Celebrate the Tata’s painting days were sold out, with many women enjoying the food, fun, and festivities as beautiful art was created while raising money for breast cancer research. Women took charge of their personal health by having on site mammograms and learning about the research that Hadassah does to combat this disease.  Thank you to all of the volunteers who made this event a huge success. Many of the Charlotte Board members also participated in the Southeastern Seaboard Region Board meeting in Raleigh, where ideas, goals, and implementation of Hadassah’s  mission was discussed by over 40 of our Region’s dedicated volunteers.

In the next few months, we will be updating and modernizing our community wide directory. The Charlotte Chapter of Hadassah has provided you with this resource for the past 70 years. We will be requesting that everyone update their information online, in order to provide the most accurate information for this valuable community resource. More information will be available in the coming months. October will come to an end with our Celebrate the Tata’s event, and we look forward to a fabulous and festive night. Click here for your Big Reveal Tickets at the Ritz Carlton on October 27, 2016.

November will be here before we know it, with our Israeli Product Fair on November 13. Please click here to reserve your vender table, or find out more info about this fundraiser for the Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem. As the calendar year comes to an end, we hope that you will make your annual donation to Hadassah. YOU are a valuable part of our Chapter. We share common goals and interests as they relate to the future of the Jewish people in Israel, the US and the rest of the diaspora. Your donation will help support programs in health care, advocacy, youth aliyah, and women’s issues. Please click here to make your annual donation. And finally, please forgive me for anything I may have said or done this past year that may have hurt your feelings or have come across differently than I had hoped. I am looking forward to a year of friendship and good health for all.

L’Shana Tova,

Dana L. Kapustin
