The first Hadassah activity in Charlotte began in 1925 when Miss Dorothy Hirsch organized a teen-aged group known as the “Hadassah Buds”. This group functioned for two years as an outlet for young women interested in contributing to the Palestine Infant Welfare Fund. In 1934, the Buds, now adults, blossomed into a fully chartered chapter. According to Minnie Sutker, a charter member, “On October 3, 1934, fifteen women met in a private dining room at a cafeteria on West Trade Street, borrowed money from each other to pay their dues, signed the Charter, and thus the Charlotte Chapter of Hadassah, with Rhea White as President, was officially organized. It was a momentous occasion, and if you were there, you will always remember that day.” The Charlotte Chapter has functioned fully and proudly since that time and how we have grown! Charlotte now boasts 1,094 members, including over 959 life members. Over 70 men lend their support as Hadassah Associates. Education programs command a significant portion of the calendar. The chapter offers study groups throughout the year, called Lunch & Learn along with other meetings designed to educate and inform our members on issues and topics which affect them as American Jewish women. Another favorite and well attended program is Health Night, an informative, educational night with guest physicians that is open to the entire community. Our Health Night in March was incredibly educational, and well attended. Sharon Goretsky and her committee shared the latest information on Multiple Sclerosis from Hadassah Hospital. Local specialists discussed MS, community members spoke about their personal experiences, and LJCC staff spoke as well, on the benefits of exercise. What a wonderful night that was! Thank you to everyone who helped make this happen.
Our membership event at Amy Rosewater's house was SO FUN!! We welcomed Laura Lewin and discussed her book. We laughed, met new friends, and had a great time. Thank you to Amy for opening your home, and for a fun girl's night out! You won't want to miss the next get together!
Our Passover tasting was delicious and enjoyable. We shared new Passover recipes, and met new friends. This was our second year doing this at Lynda White's home, and it has become a wonderful Passover tradition. Thank you Lynda White and Roz Cooper.
Moving into April we are busy with the TaTas plans for 2017. Lots of fun things to look forward to. If you would like to be involved in the TaTas planning committee, please email Sandra Goldman, firstname.lastname@example.org to get involved. Thank you Sandra for taking the lead once again.
May brings two wonderful events. May 2nd we will study Israeli Poetry with Rabbi Dusty Klass from Temple Beth El. Everyone is welcome, and we are grateful to Beth El Sisterhood for their partnership. Lorie Arthur will share her artistic talents with us and help us use the poetry to inspire us to create art. Thank you Amalia Warshenbrot for your leadership with this event. May 11th we will dance at the LJCC to bring attention to women heart health month. We are grateful to the LJCC for partnering with us as together we educate each other on exercise and the heart healthy benefits of being active. Thank you Sharon Goretsky for your leadership.
There is so much going on in Hadassah Charlotte. WE have heard from many of you that you are inspired by our initiative, motivated by our membership, and we are grateful for your generosity. Please join us, as Women Who Do. There is so much to be done!
