The present Charlottesville Chapter of Hadassah was formed in 1978 as part of the Northern Seaboard Region. A smaller earlier chapter, begun in the 1940’s, had been disbanded in the 1960’s. In 1982 the Chapter was re-assigned to be part of the Southern Seaboard Region of Hadassah. Charlottesville is located along the foothills of the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains, southwest of Washington, DC and west of the state capitol of Richmond. It is the economic, cultural, and educational center of a multi-county region in Central Virginia, as represented by our members who come from the city and its surrounding counties. We are home to The University of Virginia, Monticello, and Shenandoah National Park. Three US presidents were born or lived in the Charlottesville area, Thomas Jefferson, James Monroe, and James Madison. We are a vibrant chapter of over 350 members. Our schedule boasts exciting programs and events almost every month of the year. In April 2004 we were proud to host the Southern Seaboard Region Spring Conference and Shabbaton, “Matriarchs and Magnolias: Jewish Women of the South – Agents of Change,” a dynamic collaboration between Hadassah and The University of Virginia Institute for Public History and Jewish Studies Program, our local Congregation Beth Israel, The Southern Jewish Historical Society, and The University of Virginia Art Museum.
