Hadassah Southern

The Southern Region of Hadassah’s beginning is twofold. The Southern Region as we know it today (the states we represent) was reorganized and began in February of 1938. This is the date we use as our beginning. However, the first Southern Region was formed November 29, 1926 and consisted of 13 chapters in five states: Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Florida and Louisiana. With the growth of so many chapters during the next 12 years, the need to reorganize was apparent. The first conference of the reorganized Southern Region was held in Birmingham, AL in February 1938. Our Region now consists of chapters in Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi, parts of Louisiana, Alabama and the panhandle of Florida.

Equal Pay Now Lobby Day Louisiana State Capitol April 12, 2016
State Capital

“People who work hard deserve more than a decent living . . . we deserve a decent life”.

But 50-years after the Equal Pay Act was signed into law, women, on average, earn ONLY 79 cents for every dollar earned by men, and the numbers are even worse for women of color.

And in Louisiana the situation is even worse!  For so long, we've seen Louisiana top the list of the biggest gender disparity in pay. On average, women in Louisiana make 65.3 cents for every dollar a man makes. Louisiana ranks LAST in the U.S. when it comes to the gender wage gap. If current trends continue, women in Louisiana will not see equal pay until the year 2106. Yes, 90 years from today.

This page in our history may finally have come to an end! On April 12, 2016, the following organizations joined forces in support of Equal Pay Day at the State Capital:

  • American Association of University Women of Louisiana(AAUW LA)
  • Hadassah New Orleans
  •  Legislative Agenda for Women(LAW)
  • Louisiana Federation of Business and Professional Women
  • Louisiana Movement(SPAN)
  • National Council of Jewish Women Louisiana
  • NOW Louisiana Baton Rouge, New Orleans, Shreveport

What an incredible experience, advocating for Equal Pay Day! Even the heavy rain and thunderstorms couldn’t stop Teri Gross and Ilana Reisin from driving to this event at the Louisiana State Capitol in Baton Rouge!

The day started at 8:30 A.M. with registration & advocacy assignments, followed by

legislative updates, advocacy, and an Equal Pay Speakers Forum.  Governor John Bel Edwards was the keynote speaker, followed by Christopher Lu, Deputy Secretary, U.S. Dept. of Labor, the bill’s main sponsor Sen. J.P. Morrell (District 3, New Orleans) and other Legislative sponsors and special guests. Governor John Bel Edwards expressed his commitment for equal pay. He and Christopher Lu demonstrated a great understanding of wage issues and conveyed their support to end poverty.

After lunch, Senate Bill 254 (the Equal Pay bill) was presented at the Senate floor. Following great deal of deliberation and compromises that were worked out by Senator Morrell and Senator Sharon Hewitt (District 1, Slidell), the Senate voted 28-10 to support the bill.

This was a big victory, a historic day for women and families in Louisiana.

By the end of the day we were all exhausted, and overwhelmed with excitement and a sense of empowerment.

Thanks to our efforts and the Senate’s passage of SB 254, we have made a giant leap forward toward closing the state’s gap in pay and passing a law a law that benefits our women, their families, businesses, and our overall economy. Now on to the House and some hard work!!  WE WILL NEED EVERYONE’S HELP!!!

Shalom Hadassah Southern!

Hadassah’s 98th National Convention in Atlanta Georgia, was said to be “one of the best conventions” Hadassah has hosted!! I would certainly agree that it truly was amazing, and for me personally a very memorable event--one that we can share its message with others for a long time to come!!!

The Power of our Dreams was the message that rang throughout the entire four-day event. Plenary sessions included Building Global Partnerships, Jewish Continuity and the love of Israel, Advocating for Gender Equity in Medical Research, HMO and the amazing work we are accomplishing there (yes we all cried when hearing the amazing stories of those miracle lifesaving Hadassah moments).

There were numerous breakout sessions that were also inspiring. We learned about Airspace to Cyberspace, how to increase your Hadassah Impact (one of my favorites), A Call to Action on how to end Human Trafficking, and Curriculum Watch: Fact, Fiction, Innuendo or Bias.

We Awoke VERY EARLY, and stayed up very late. We laughed, we danced, we sang, we ate (lots of Chicken and Salmon), and we shopped! In the moments when I was most tired, and a third cup of coffee just didn’t seem to do the trick, I simply had to look down the row of over 30 Hadassah Southern women who were right by my side the whole way--everyone on OUR team was totally  engaged, attended all the Plenaries, took notes feverishly, and participated in the breakout sessions.

I had a critical breakthrough while there in regard to the work that we do every day. Hadassah Southern women are the BEST really, and maybe I am biased but—WOW—we shined like diamonds! For those who were able to join us, again a big thank you, but those who couldn’t attend for one reason or another, we PROMISE we will bring the power of our dreams home to each and every one you.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for being a part of this team….BIG HUGS!!!

Bonnie
