February is Heart Health Month
Cardiovascular disease affects an estimated 43 million women in the United States, but it can be avoided through education, healthy living and medical screenings. When detected early, contributing factors can be treated, preventing the development of heart disease. Empowering women and men with knowledge will enable them to live healthier lives and make appropriate medical decisions for themselves and their families. According to Israel's Central Bureau of Statistics, during the last three decades heart disease sharply decreased in Israel, similar to the trend in Western countries. However, heart disease is still one of the major causes of death for both men and women in Israel, accounting for 17 percent of Israeli deaths last year. Date: 2/6/2013


WIN Volunteers Join in Planting Commemorative Trees
On Wednesday, the Winter In Netanya group participated in a tree planting ceremony-"Shtil Lekol Til" -"a plant for each rocket". 1,500 trees were planted by hundreds of soldiers and the JNF to match the estimated number of rockets fired into Israel from Gaza before and during the Pillar of Defense operation. Everyone gathered in one huge tent for the ceremony which preceded the planting. Date: 1/31/2013

Eli Finds His Future at Youth Aliyah
Some of the children in our Youth Aliyah villages are survivors of violence and cultural dislocation. Eli, a high school senior, moved to Israel from Romania with his mother and sister when he was ten. Despite her obvious intelligence, Eli's mother, an engineer, became overwhelmed with emotional problems. They became extreme: first she beat him and, when he became old enough, he hit her back. She called the police. He was referred to Meir Shfeyah Youth Aliyah village. Date: 1/16/2013
