National President Marcie Natan Strengthens Hadassah's Bond with Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center (CCHMC)
This year, as part of their annual fundraising events, the Cincinnati Chapter of Hadassah brought in National President Marcie Natan, as the guest speaker at three events and had her meet personally with other Hadassah supporters in the community. She also toured Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center (CCHMC) and heard from CCHMC doctors, including one Hadassah doctor in the United States working and studying for three years, about the incredible benefits to CCHMC and the two Hadassah Hospitals in Jerusalem brought about by the Israel Exchange Program (IEP). This was capped off by Councilmen P.G. Sittenfeld giving Marcie and Chapter President Bonnie Juran Ullner a Proclamation signed by the mayor proclaiming it Hadassah Day in Cincinnati on April 25, 2013. Date: 5/1/2013

Equal Pay Day 2013
April 9 is Equal Pay Day 2013. Since Equal Pay day was established in 1996—17 years ago—the wage gap has decreased by only 4 cents. At this rate, the wage gap won't close until 2057—45 years from now! America's women are worth more and they deserve better. Date: 4/9/2013

Advocate for Comprehensive Gun Control Legislation
On April 8, 2013, Congress returned from a two-week recess to the issue of gun control at the top of its agenda. Over the last several months, Hadassah has worked with its coalition partners to advocate for comprehensive gun control legislation addressing firearms, improved access to mental health services, and a conversation about violence in the media. Support Contraceptive Coverage Mandate
Over the last several months, more than 50 companies have filed court cases challenging the Contraception Mandate—the proposal announced in January of 2012 that requires most insurance policies to include free contraceptive coverage (no co-pays). These companies claim that the religious beliefs of the organization—or even the boss’s own views—should determine what contraceptive coverage is available for all employees. Date: 4/4/2013

Yesterday, the Supreme Court of the United States heard oral arguments in a landmark gay rights case: United States v. Windsor. The case addresses the constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), which federally defines marriage—and all rights and benefits associated with that designation—as a union between a man and a woman. February is Heart Health Month
Cardiovascular disease affects an estimated 43 million women in the United States, but it can be avoided through education, healthy living and medical screenings. When detected early, contributing factors can be treated, preventing the development of heart disease. Empowering women and men with knowledge will enable them to live healthier lives and make appropriate medical decisions for themselves and their families. According to Israel's Central Bureau of Statistics, during the last three decades heart disease sharply decreased in Israel, similar to the trend in Western countries. However, heart disease is still one of the major causes of death for both men and women in Israel, accounting for 17 percent of Israeli deaths last year. Date: 2/6/2013

WIN Volunteers Join in Planting Commemorative Trees
On Wednesday, the Winter In Netanya group participated in a tree planting ceremony-"Shtil Lekol Til" -"a plant for each rocket". 1,500 trees were planted by hundreds of soldiers and the JNF to match the estimated number of rockets fired into Israel from Gaza before and during the Pillar of Defense operation. Hadassah National Board Votes on Policy Issues
Yesterday, Hadassah concluded its winter board meeting by voting on two key policy issues. The National Board of Hadassah reaffirmed the statement it made in 2000 in support of stronger gun control legislation and expanded it to call for a ban on assault weapons. Eli Finds His Future at Youth Aliyah
Some of the children in our Youth Aliyah villages are survivors of violence and cultural dislocation. Eli, a high school senior, moved to Israel from Romania with his mother and sister when he was ten. Despite her obvious intelligence, Eli's mother, an engineer, became overwhelmed with emotional problems. They became extreme: first she beat him and, when he became old enough, he hit her back. She called the police. He was referred to Meir Shfeyah Youth Aliyah village. Date: 1/16/2013
