International Human Rights Day 2013
Today is International Human Rights Day—65 years since the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted by the United Nations. Eleanor Roosevelt, the U.S. Delegate to the United Nations—and Honorary Chairwoman of Hadassah’s Youth Aliyah—chaired the United Nations Commission on Human Rights, created in 1947, and championed the creation of the declaration. Remembering Kristallnacht
Kristallnacht—The Night of Broken Glass—was the beginning of Hitler's Final Solution and the Shoah. On November 9, 1938 Nazi storm troopers in Germany and Austria ransacked, demolished and burnt 1000 synagogues, 7000 Jewish businesses, countless Jewish schools, hospitals and community buildings. Rampant looting took place—not by the Nazis, but by civilians. Violence erupted in hundreds of communities, some where only a few Jewish families lived. Almost 100 Jews were murdered and 30,000 were sent off to concentration camps. Date: 11/8/2013


Senate Passes LGBT Employment Non-Discrimination Act
November 7, 2013, the Senate passed the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, which would ban employment decisions on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. The bill passed the Senate in a bipartisan vote of 64-32, but it now moves to the House, where it faces tough opposition. Thank your Senators for standing up against discrimination and urge your Representatives to pass the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA)! Date: 11/7/2013

Harvest With a Goal
Before dawn on the day before the harvest festival of Sukkoth, a dozen and a half teens are crouching in the vineyards of Meir Shfeya Youth Village, picking the best purple clusters. Their classmates are already on holiday vacation, but they have volunteered to stay behind to help with the grape harvest of the ripe carignan grapes that will be used for the village winery. This fieldwork will also help compensate the Village for their participation in the forthcoming educational trip to Ethiopia in November. Most of the students come from Ethiopian backgrounds—they were either born in Ethiopia or are children of immigrants from Ethiopia. Others are non-Ethiopian Israelis who were chosen for outstanding citizenship in the village. Date: 9/17/2013

50 Years of the Equal Pay Act
On June 10, 1963, President John F. Kennedy signed the historic Equal Pay Act. That year postage stamps were 5 cents, a gallon of gas was 30 cents, and women earned 59 cents to a man’s dollar. Today, prices for postage and gasoline sure have changed dramatically, but women's earnings have not. Women still only earn 77 cents to a man's dollar and the wage gap hasn’t budged a cent for the last decade. America’s women are worth more and they deserve better! Date: 6/10/2013

National President Marcie Natan Strengthens Hadassah's Bond with Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center (CCHMC)
This year, as part of their annual fundraising events, the Cincinnati Chapter of Hadassah brought in National President Marcie Natan, as the guest speaker at three events and had her meet personally with other Hadassah supporters in the community. She also toured Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center (CCHMC) and heard from CCHMC doctors, including one Hadassah doctor in the United States working and studying for three years, about the incredible benefits to CCHMC and the two Hadassah Hospitals in Jerusalem brought about by the Israel Exchange Program (IEP). This was capped off by Councilmen P.G. Sittenfeld giving Marcie and Chapter President Bonnie Juran Ullner a Proclamation signed by the mayor proclaiming it Hadassah Day in Cincinnati on April 25, 2013. Date: 5/1/2013
