SUFFOLK REGION CELEBRATES HADASSAH’S 100THBIRTHDAY THROUGHOUT THE YEAR
By Debra Cohen, OVP & Centennial Chair
Throughout 2012, Hadassah’s 100thyear, the Suffolk Region of Hadassah has had multiple activities to celebrate our centennial year. Some of the chapters throughout the region arranged Hadassah Shabbats at local synagogues and included remarks about Hadassah’s development since its inception in 1912. A copy of the Commack Hills Tova’s Hadassah program is available upon request. Everyone in the region was invited to attend these services. In addition, a number of chapters made arrangements with local libraries to have displays showing Hadassah’s projects throughout the years. These displays gave the general public in Suffolk County a chance to see examples of Hadassah’s accomplishments.
Our yearlong celebration culminated with the presentation of a concert by The Israeli Scout Friendship Caravan Amos, on August 19, 2012, at the Commack Y Jewish Community Center in Commack, NY. We had approximately 230 attendees, spoke about Hadassah, and held a free raffle for a life or associate membership, open to a new or annual member. This was our way of reaching out into the community and letting people become more familiar with our phenomenal organization. In order for people to sign up for this free raffle, they had to provide us with contact information. We used this membership strategy to enable us to contact those who didn’t win to familiarize them with the wonderful work of Hadassah and possibly become new or life members. We were able to get almost all the food donated and secured a couple of sponsors. We arranged for six families to host the 10 scouts and two counselors. The Region provided dinner for the scouts before the concert and cookies, water, coffee and tea were served to all attendees after the concert. This event was outstanding! We charged $18 per person, $10 for scouts who came in uniformand $5 for children 12 and under. The region netted about $3000 in donations after deducting expenses. The Scouts gave an amazing, professional performance with songs, dances and change of costumes against a backdrop of Israeli scenes. The event’s success, after so much work and preparation, was an exhilarating experience for all of us.
