International Criminal Court Rejects Gaza War Investigation

ACTION ALERT
April 04, 2012

Yesterday, the International Criminal Court announced that it would not pursue an investigation into the 2008-2009 Gaza War because "Palestine" does not hold statehood status. Access to the International Criminal Court has been one of the Palestinians' objectives since they suggested seeking full membership to the United Nations. As this recent case shows, if the Palestinians are given access to the Court they will pursue cases to unfairly target and delegitimize Israel.

Last fall, the Palestinians were approved for membership to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), although their petition for full membership to the United Nations General Assembly is still pending.

Following the submission of the Palestinian application, the Quartet—the United States, United Nations, European Union, and Russia—released a statement outlining a proposed timetable for peace negotiations. Despite the international community's clear support for direct negotiations—over unilateral declarations—peace negotiations have been stalled and efforts to delegitimize Israel continue.

Last Friday, the Jewish community participated in Buy Israeli Goods Day to counter the planned Global March to Jerusalem—publicized as a massive protest on Israel's borders with millions of attendees expected from around the world. However, in reality, most protestors gathered in Israel's neighboring countries and only a few thousand materialized on the borders in Gaza and the West Bank. Jewish community leaders have emphasized that while the Global March failed, it is important to remain vigilant in monitoring Hamas and Hezbollah's actions, as their intent is to escalate violence from Gaza and distract from Iranian's nuclear plans.

Don't let Congress get distracted, show your support for Iran sanctions today! Click here to contact your legislators about the Iran Sanctions, Accountability and Human Rights Act—which would strengthen existing sanctions, close loopholes, and increase sanctions on individuals who provide support and resources to Iran's nuclear program.
