Cincinnati Chapter Hosts Prof. Dr. Yoel Donchin at Dessert Reception

Hadassah Doctor, Yoel Donchin, Visits Cincinnati – Meets with Hadassah Members, Politicians, Bankers, etc.

Sharon Casper, Cincinnati Chapter Co-President and Dr. Yoel Donchin, Hadassah Hospital Head of Patient Safety
Yoel Donchin, Head of Patient Safety at Hadassah Hebrew University Medical Center, Anesthesiology Specialist, and a Current Practitioner of Human Factors Engineering, spoke to members and friends of the Cincinnati Chapter of Hadassah.

In honor of Hadassah’s Centennial Dr. Donchin’s presentation began by highlighting Hadassah’s founder, Henrietta Szold and the first hospital. He presented how the Operating Team at Hadassah Hospital worked on being pre-emptive in the operating theatre utilizing a special Briefing as a Tool for Enhancing Team Performance and Patient Safety. Yoel shared photos of the new hospital gowns being utilized that avoid duplication and assist with modesty. Yoel concluded with the introduction of the history of Medical Clowning at Hadassah Hospital and how the program has grown.

The Dream Doctors project sponsoring medical clowns in the service of medicine, founded and funded by the Magi (Philnor) Foundation, began its operations at the Hadassah University Hospital, Ein Kerem, Jerusalem, in 2002. The Magi (Philnor) Foundation established this project and was its initial donor, contributing the start-up funding to kick off the project with three professional clowns who had extensive experience in clowning, creative drama and theater arts.

It was the hospital management who endorsed the project and especially welcomed the clowns, expressing their faith in the project and enabling the Dream Doctors to work in the different pediatric departments for an entire year as a pilot project. Now, after 10 years of activity, this project has achieved clear and astounding achievements. The scope of its quality and quantity has expanded. The Hadassah-University Medical Center, Ein Kerem, employs four professional clowns who are a part of the regular work roster in the mornings in the different departments, and are also available as determined by the medical staff.

Dr. Donchin was joined by Circus Mojo Founder Paul Miller.  Paul was invited to Israel to attend the Dream Doctors Conference this past fall by Dr. Donchin. Paul was invited to serve as a medical clown in Hadassah Hospital during his visit with Valerie Elbaz, medical anesthesiologist.  Paul Miller has traveled around the world as a clown, trained with Ringling Brothers, and trained to serve as a Medical Clown.

Yoel and Paul gave presentations at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and the Metropolitan Club to politicians, bankers, economic developers, and business executives about the benefits of medical clowning and circus wellness for patients, staff, doctors, nurses, and family.

Continuing with their entrepreneurial spirit, Miller and Dr. Donchin are working together to initiate a professional medical clowning certification, the first of its kind in the United States. The pair are also working to publish the first academic textbook on medical clowning and circus wellness.

As a way to support the expansion of programs, for one night only, Circus Mojo will host a Jerry Springer Celebrity Ringmaster performance. Jerry will step into the circus ring, where he will juggle, spin plates, and join clowns and performers. Jerry will serve as a celebrity ringmaster alongside his side kick Cincinnati Council Woman Laure Quinlivan, Ludlow Mayor Ken Wynn and an international cast.

Circus Mojo is happy to announce this joint event with multiple non-profit organizations including Hadassah, the Women's Zionist Organization of America, the largest women's volunteer organization in America. They inspire a passion for and commitment to our partnership with the land and people of Israel. It enhances the health of people worldwide through our support of medical care and research at the Hadassah Medical Organization in Jerusalem. Hadassah empowers its members and supporters, as well as youth in America and Israel, through opportunities for personal growth, education, advocacy and Jewish continuity. 50% of proceeds from ticket sales that note to "Benefit Hadassah" will go to the Hadassah Hospital.

Yoel Donchin’s visit is a continuing part of the partnership between Hadassah Medical Organization and the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center.
