Unstuffed Cabbaage

Over the years we have shared recipes from some of the wonderful cooks of Park Slope Hadassah. They have brought new and traditional dishes from all over the world to our events. This page will serve as an archive for these recipes.

Unstuffed Cabbage
Esther Lefkowitz

1 Cup Onion, Diced
2 Lbs. Ground Beef
1 Lb Shredded Cabbage (I used the Dole Coleslaw Mix)
1 -28oz can Crushed Tomatoes
1 Small Can Tomato Paste
¾ to 1 Cup Sugar
½ Cup Lemon Juice

In a large pot, heat oil. Add Onions and sauté until they start to brown. Add meat and cook through, stirring to break up chunks. Add the cabbage and continue to cook until softens. Add the remaining ingredients and check seasoning to your desired taste. Simmer for 1 hour.

Serve over Rice.

Note: If the mixture is to thick or you want it a bit more saucy, you can thin it with small amounts of water, just remember to adjust the sugar or lemon juice accordingly. This recipe freezes well.
