|Past president Florence Schoff dies at 101|
After a long life of devotion to Hadassah, Florence Kunian Schoff, a former Chapter president, has passed away at age 101. Born in New York City, she moved several times as a child, finally living and graduating from college in Minnesota with a degree in music. Afterwards, she taught piano and supported many musical organizations. The Minnesota Orchestra considered her to be its oldest attendee, going to its concerts until she was 100.
Florence's love for music was matched by her love for Israel. On May 14, 1948, when Israel became a country, she held an open house. Police officers were on hand to direct traffic, cars being parked for blocks and blocks by people who came to her home to celebrate this occasion. Future US Vice President Hubert Humphrey was among those in attendance.
A life member of Hadassah, she belonged to the Herzl Shalom group. She was president of the Minneapolis Chapter of Hadassah in the 40's and served on the Chapter board into her 90's. In 2006, in honor of her 100th birthday, the Chapter presented her with a Hadassah certificate and a historical display. We have been honored to have had such a devoted member and leader for so many years.
