FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
February 10, 2012
NEW YORK – In response to President Obama's reaffirmation today that all women will have access to coverage for contraceptives, Hadassah, the Women's Zionist Organization of America, expressed the following statement:
Part and parcel to our 100-year-old commitment to advancing women's health is ensuring that all women have access to the medical care they need. Furthermore, Hadassah, the Women's Zionist Organization of America (HWZOA), has always stood as a public advocate for a woman's right to choose; nobody should dictate what a woman does with her body or how a woman plans for the future of her family.
It is the government's responsibility to remain above religious differences and ensure that contraceptives are accessible as broadly as possible. As President Obama laid out last week in his original proposal requiring all employers to provide health care coverage for employees' contraceptive prescriptions, Hadassah appreciates that the administration continues to recognize the medical need for all women to have access to contraceptive coverage.
We will, however, watch closely to ensure that the new proposal does not create undue barriers to women's access to contraceptives.
Preventive health care encourages personal health awareness and early detection— rightfully putting women in charge of their health care. People deserve the right to make family planning decisions privately, in consultation with medical advice, and in accordance with their own religious, moral and ethical values.
Hadassah is a strong advocate for a woman's freedom of choice and opposes any attempts to restrict, through administrative regulations, legislation, or court action, the right to reproductive choice and/or the use of family planning programs. Hadassah will continue to work with the Obama administration to ensure that whatever policy is ultimately put forward is in the best interest of women.
Founded in 1912, Hadassah, the Women's Zionist Organization of America, is celebrating its 100th year. Hadassah is the largest women's Zionist Jewish membership organization in the United States. In Israel, it supports medical care and research, education and youth programs, and reforestation and parks projects. In the United States, Hadassah promotes health education, social action and advocacy, volunteerism, Jewish education and research, Young Judaea and connections with Israel.
