Strongly Urges Favorable Stem-Cell Legislation to Become Law

(New York, NY -- January 11, 2007) -- Hadassah, the Women’s Zionist Organization of America, applauds today’s passage in the House of Representatives of The Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act (H.R. 3). By a vote of 253 to 174, the House confirmed the overwhelming will of the American people, who are in favor of federal funding for embryonic stem cell research to advance this potentially lifesaving frontier of science.

In a statement today, Hadassah National President June Walker thanked the House for its swift vote: “We congratulate the House of Representatives on today’s vote and thank the leadership for placing stem cell legislation so high on its agenda. The fact that this piece of legislation was scheduled for a vote and passed so early in this session signals the Representatives’ acknowledgement that stem cell research is critically important to our citizens.

“We urge the Senate to schedule a vote soon, and further implore President Bush to sign this legislation into law when it comes to his desk. When he does, the possibility of federal funding will dramatically increase the number of stem cell lines available for research and exponentially increase the potential of finding cures and treatment for intractable and debilitating diseases, like Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and multiple sclerosis. We consider the speedy passage of this legislation a moral imperative.”
