Susan G. Komen For The Cure® & Hadassah Team Up For Israel Breast Cancer Campaign, October 25-29, 2010

Israel has one of the highest rates of breast cancer in the world. Ashkenazi Jews are ten times more likely to carry the BRCA gene—a risk factor for developing breast cancer at some point in their lifetime—than non-Jews. Here at Hadassah, we have a long history of creating programs that educate our members, and the public-at-large, about the disease.

Now, Hadassah, the City of Jerusalem, health advocates and scientists have joined with Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, the world’s largest breast cancer organization, for a week of events in Israel to examine major scientific issues in breast cancer while advancing the international breast cancer movement.

The week of events Oct. 25-29 launches the Israel Breast Cancer Collaborative. Hadassah and our partner organizations seek to enhance advocacy, awareness, screening and treatment of breast cancer.

SAVE THE DATE: The centerpiece of the week is the first Susan G. Komen Israel Race for the Cure® around the walls of Old Jerusalem on October 28. Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat will help lead the Race. “As a runner myself, I know the power of these events to unite people toward a common purpose,” Barkat said. “I am honored to open the gates of our unique city to any and all people who want to see a cure for breast cancer in our lifetime."

Ambassador Nancy G. Brinker, founder and CEO of Susan G. Komen for the Cure will take part in a plenary session, about new approaches to fighting breast cancer, at our 95th National Convention, July 25-28 in Hollywood, FL.

Susan G. Komen for the Cure has granted nearly $2 million to organizations in Israel, including Hebrew University-Hadassah Hospital and the Weizmann Institute of Science. “We have enjoyed longstanding friendships and productive collaborations in Israel,” said Ambassador Brinker. “The new Israel Breast Cancer Collaborative takes our relationships to the next level–in partnership with the city of Jerusalem, Hadassah, government leaders, advocates and our global partners–as we work to address the critical issues in breast cancer for the women of Israel and the world.”
