Israelis are used to having a Bar Mitzvah at 13-years-old and Bat Mitzvah at 12. Many Jews around the world do the same. But many birthright participants have never had a Bar or Bat Mitzvah —until they come on a Young Judaea Birthright trip.
One of the most special, moving and educational experiences offered is the chance to have a Bar or Bat Mitzvah in Jerusalem at the Davidson Center at the Southern Excavation of the site of the Temple.
Recently, an emotional and spiritual ceremony became a reality for six young women on their birthright trip. It started by overlooking the Kotel Plaza and then dancing the six participants down under a chuppah with shofar blowers and trumpeters creating a festive atmosphere. The ceremony itself included the women reading from the Torah and giving a "dvar Torah" as they spoke of their greater connection to Israel and Judaism that came from their time in Israel with Young Judaea and birthright.
