Shabbat Shalom from Jerusalem

Friday, November 23, 2012

I'm writing while driving from Jerusalem to Ramat Gan. The rain is falling, Shabbat will soon envelope the country and the bus stops are filled with soldiers returning home. I can only imagine the joy of families waiting for them!

In my few days here I have felt all the emotions of a country preparing to sacrifice its sons to protect its people and it's land. The gratitude to the US for the Iron Dome and the support of our administration. The trauma of the children as sirens went off, time and time again. The anxiety when the first promise of a ceasefire did not materialize and the debates when it was announced. All here know this is a respite and not an answer to the problem, and there are mixed feelings about whether Netanyahu made the right decision, but seeing the soldiers this morning made it very easy for me to say this is good for now - and the rain says to me that G-d is sending a message of affirmation and life as well

How blessed I feel personally to have been here through this conflict and for the opportunity to say Hadassah is here as well. I spent yesterday morning at our youth village, Hadassah Neurim, with 50 kids and one Safta who came from Ashdod to escape the rockets and were welcomed with open arms. The dorm rooms are wall to wall beds but the kids are able to study and are having a wonderful few days in a safe environment. Every one of the boys understood the importance of taking their studies seriously so they can pass the Begrut and serve in the IDF.

Now I am off to spend Shabbat—truly to celebrate Shabbat—with my family who have also been sleeping in safe rooms with the children as sirens went off in Tel Aviv as well this past week.

Thank you to all who have provided extra support - financial, by writing to your local papers, and using social media to show support, and to those who are participating in the Solidarity Mission to be a part of the healing process now that quiet has been restored.

Shabbat Shalom, Marcie
