NEW YORK — In response to the death today of Senator Frank Lautenberg, Marcie Natan, National President of Hadassah, the Women's Zionist Organization of America, released the following statement:

Senator Frank Lautenberg was a champion for Israel, Jews and women during his three decades in the Senate. At the moment of his passing, we remember him as an advocate for Jewish immigrants and other refugees seeking new lives in the United States, a supporter of women's reproductive rights, and a spokesman on women's health issues.

His history with Hadassah goes back decades, including the 1968 founding of the Lautenberg Center for Immunology and Cancer Research at what is today the Hebrew University-Hadassah Medical School in Jerusalem. Senator Lautenberg was a true friend to Hadassah, regularly meeting with our members from across the country when they came to Washington to advocate for women's issues and Israel on Capitol Hill. He is survived by his wife, two step children and four children, including one who is a keeper and on the Westport Hadassah Board.  Senator Lautenberg was gracious and eager to discuss women's health and reproductive issues.

The senator was an engaged statesman on Israel and the Jewish community, whose commitments went far beyond his work and included service on the boards of several Jewish and Israeli organizations. He will be truly missed.

Hadassah, the Women's Zionist Organization of America, is the largest women's Zionist Jewish membership organization in the United States, and was founded in 1912. 330,000 members, associates, and supporters strong, Hadassah is now in its second century, growing our commitment to innovative and life-changing medical care and research, women's empowerment, education, advocacy, philanthropy and building Jewish identity – in Israel, America and around the world.
