Hadassah Continues Women’s Health Advocacy

Since the Stand Up for Women's Health Rally and Lobby Day in April, Hadassah representatives have been closely monitoring additional legislation and regulations that will affect access to women's health services, domestically and abroad. Show your support for women's health by taking action on these two critical issues!

MARCH for Military Women Act
Hadassah has joined with its coalition partners from the Religious Advocates Working Group to encourage support for the Military Access to Reproductive Care and Health (MARCH) for Military Women Act (S. 1214).

Unlike other federal bans on abortion coverage (i.e., Medicaid or the Federal Employee Health Benefit program), the military ban provides no exception for cases of rape and incest. This bill would repeal the ban on a woman using private funds to obtain an abortion on a military base and ensure that servicewomen and dependents receive federal coverage of abortion in cases of rape and incest through the military health insurance system.

Access to women's and reproductive health services is essential for all women. American servicewomen and their families deserve the same care which their civilian counterparts may legally obtain. At a time when servicewomen are risking their lives to protect others, the MARCH Act would represent a significant step forward in granting these brave women a basic level of reproductive freedom.

Preventative Health Services for Women
Last month, the U.S. Institute on Medicine released an historic report, Clinical Preventive Services for Women: Closing the Gaps, which recommended that many women's preventative health services, including contraceptives, should be fully covered (without co-pays) by health insurance providers. Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) Kathleen Sebelius has announced interim final regulations requiring insurance providers to fully cover women's preventative health services. These regulations do include a religious exception so certain employers could op-out of contraceptive coverage. HHS is soliciting public comments until the end of September about this decision.
