Protect Charitable Giving Incentives

Hadassah joins fellow Jewish and other philanthropic groups in speaking out against plans to decrease charitable giving tax breaks, which encourage donations for countless programs and services in the United States and around the world.

The proposal to reduce charitable giving tax deductions, included in the jobs bill currently in Congress, could decrease donations by $3.9 billion, according to the Center for Philanthropy at Indiana University. The charitable sector accounts for nine percent of American wages, 10 percent of jobs, and contributes $1 trillion to the marketplace. Without the support of generous donors, countless charities could be forced to close their doors or cut essential services for the poor, elderly and unemployed.

Hadassah, through the continuous support of its Members, Associates and donors, has been a vibrant member of the philanthropic community for nearly 100 years. This proposal could mean cuts to Hadassah College and Young Judaea scholarships, fewer teachers at Hadassah's Youth Aliyah villages and less funding for groundbreaking research at the new Sarah Wetsman Davidson Tower.

Amidst the current political climate, Hadassah reaffirms its support for the Jewish Council for Public Affairs' Statement on Civility, which encourages its members and all elected officials to accept and promote a culture of civility and cooperation in order to handle the many challenges ahead. Legislation to help America's economy is necessary, but can not be funded at the expense of the neediest citizens!

Contact your elected officials and urge them to work across the aisle to protect charitable giving while also finding ways to help all struggling Americans.
