Increase Sanctions on Iran

This week, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) released a report on the status of Iran’s nuclear capabilities, revealing clear evidence that Iran has continued developing a weaponized nuclear program. Click here to read the full report.

The Israeli government is reviewing the report and has yet to release a response. Prior to the report release, White House Deputy National Security Adviser Ben Rhodes emphasized, “What we're focused on is a diplomatic strategy which . . . increases the pressure on the Iranians, through financial pressure, through economic sanctions, through diplomatic isolation.”

Last week—in anticipation of the report’s release—the House Foreign Affairs Committee fast-tracked two bipartisan bills to increase U.S. sanctions on Iran. The Iran Threat Reduction Act of 2011 (H.R. 1905) would strengthen existing sanctions and close loopholes. The bill also includes an amendment targeting the Central Bank of Iran—which is widely suspected of financing Iran's nuclear program—and banks that do business with it and the United States. The Iran, North Korea and Syria Nonproliferation Reform and Modernization Act (H.R. 2105) increases the sanctions on individuals who provide support and resources to these countries’ nuclear programs.

Hadassah continues to affirm its policy statements opposing the Middle East Arms Race, which condemn Iran’s acquisition of weapons of mass destruction, posing a grave threat to regional and international stability. Iran has shown that it will not be deterred, so it must be cut off from all possible sources of support.

Urge your Representatives and Senators to support Iran sanctions legislation and work for its prompt passage. Visit the Hadassah National Action Center to email your legislators today!
