|Iran Sanctions Update|
On December 2, the Senate voted unanimously for sanctions targeting the Central Bank of Iran (CBI)—which is widely suspected of financing Iran's nuclear program—and banks that do business with it and the United States. Thank your Senators for their support and urge your Representatives to vote for the Iran Threat Reduction Act of 2011 (H.R. 1905). This bill would strengthen existing sanctions and close loopholes, in addition to sanctioning the CBI.
Also, urge your Representatives and Senators to support the Iran, North Korea and Syria Nonproliferation Reform and Modernization Act (H.R. 2105), which increases sanctions on individuals who provide support and resources to these countries' nuclear programs.
These bills have been fast-tracked in Congress in response to a recent International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) report on the status of Iran's nuclear capabilities, which revealed clear evidence that Iran has continued developing a weaponized nuclear program. Click here to read the full report.
Prior to the report release, White House Deputy National Security Adviser Ben Rhodes emphasized, "What we're focused on is a diplomatic strategy which . . . increases the pressure on the Iranians, through financial pressure, through economic sanctions, through diplomatic isolation."
Hadassah continues to affirm its policy statements opposing the Middle East Arms Race, which condemn Iran's acquisition of weapons of mass destruction, posing a grave threat to regional and international stability. Iran has shown that it will not be deterred, so it must be cut off from all possible sources of support.
Urge your Representatives and Senators to support Iran sanctions legislation and work for its prompt passage. Visit the Hadassah National Action Center to email your legislators today!Date: 12/5/2011
