In response to recent discriminatory acts against women by extremists in Israel, Hadassah’s National Board voted to enact the following Zionist Affairs Policy Statement.
Protecting Women’s Rights in Israel
Hadassah, The Women's Zionist Organization of America, Inc., has always stood firmly against discrimination with regard to gender and religion, and denounces recent attempts by religious extremists to segregate and discriminate against women in Israel's public spaces. Hadassah maintains its long-standing commitment to the principle of religious pluralism and the preservation of Jewish unity.
Hadassah Members and Associates have a clear understanding of the dangers of discrimination. We believe that each individual has the right to live, study and work in an atmosphere free from harassment and discriminatory practices. These practices threaten a community's viability, and all levels of government have an obligation to protect all of its citizens from such abhorrent behavior.
Hadassah welcomes the public statements of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Shimon Peres on the current discrimination against women in Israel and calls on religious and political leaders throughout the State to join in condemning—and committing to end—these extremist positions.
Hadassah urges the government of the State of Israel and all its municipalities to address instances of public discrimination against women, fully investigate such cases and bring those who commit these acts to justice. Date: 1/18/2012
