Support Women's Employment Rights

Women's employment rights are center stage, with the introduction of the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act (PWFA) today and the pay equity debate among pundits, the press, and possibly the Senate in the coming months.

Women's participation in the labor force—now up to 46.7%—has come a long way since the 1950s. However, the glass ceiling still remains, hindering the economic equity and security of female workers and their families.

Fact: In 2011, 70.6% of mothers with children under 18 and 55.8% of those with children under 1 were members of the workforce.

Fact: Nearly two-thirds of all mothers are primary or co-breadwinners for their households.

Fact: A woman with comparable education and experience earns only 77 cents, compared to every dollar made by her male counterparts, resulting in an average of over $10,000 in lost wages every year.

It is time to close the loopholes in discrimination and disability laws that deprive women of basic employment rights!

The Pregnant Workers Fairness Act—like the Americans with Disabilities Act—would help pregnant workers maintain economic stability and a healthy pregnancy by requiring that employers provide reasonable work accommodations. Urge your Representative to become a co-sponsor of PWFA through the Hadassah National Action Center.

The Paycheck Fairness Act would bar retaliation against employees who disclose their wages to coworkers and—like the Equal Rights Act—deter wage discrimination by strengthening penalties for equal pay violations. Use the Hadassah National Action Center to show your support for pay equity and stay tuned to the Email Action Network for more updates on the status of this bill.
